Weber State softball loses 4 straight at Saint Mary’s tournament

Weber State softball couldn’t find the win column in a weather-jumbled four games this weekend at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California.
WSU’s weekend opener against Columbia and its cap at Santa Clara were both canceled due to wet weather.
The Wildcats played Harvard, its two scheduled games against Saint Mary’s and then a third Sunday against the Gaels to replace the lost Santa Clara game.
Freshman shortstop Sadie Kirk hit 5 for 8 with five RBIs in three games during the trip.
Weber State (8-20) returns to Utah for a Monday matchup at Utah Valley before finally reaching its home opener.
The Wildcats are scheduled to host San Diego for three games starting Friday, March 21, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., followed by the series finale at noon Saturday, March 22.
Entering the final stretch of nonconference play, Riley Whalen leads WSU with a .384 batting average. Kirk is hitting .380 and leads the team with 20 RBIs, 20 runs scored and 11 walks. Kirk, Olivia Birkinshaw and Eva Richardson have each hit five homers.
Cali McCraw leads WSU in the circle with a 3-3 record, 5.40 ERA, 45 innings and a 1.51 WHIP.
HARVARD 7, WSU 5
Weber fell behind 6-0 early and rallied enough to bring the tying run to the plate but couldn’t complete the comeback Saturday to start the weekend’s action.
Sadie Kirk hit an RBI triple in the fifth to get Weber on the board. Kirk, Olivia Birkinshaw, Abby Grundy and Gianna Memoli each tallied two hits, with the latter three each hitting one double.
Jayci Finch pitched the final four innings, allowing two runs.
ST. MARY’S 4, WSU 3
Saturday’s second game brought the opposite: WSU took a 3-0 lead in the fifth but fell in a Gaels rally.
Sadie Kirk accounted for all three RBIs with a double in the third and a single in the fifth.
WSU’s Cali McCraw took the shutout into the fifth before Sam Buckley hit a two-run homer to tie the game. Braxton Brown hit a solo shot in the sixth off McCraw for the game-winner. RJ Parra took over in the sixth for WSU and retired the Gaels in order from there.
ST. MARY’S 13, WSU 5
Abby Grundy’s three-run double in the fifth pulled WSU to within 7-5 on Sunday but Sam Buckley hit another key homer for the Gaels in the bottom half to help the home team pull away. Grundy hit two doubles in the game.
ST. MARY’S 4, WSU 1
Sunday concluded with a 4-1 defeat to the Gaels. Mariyah Delgado doubled in Abby Grundy for WSU’s lone run in the third inning. Riley Whalen and Jordan McMahon each hit 2 for 4 at the top of the order, including hits to start the game in the first inning, but neither were brought home.
Brooke Merrill allowed two runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings. Cali McCraw finished the final 4 2/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits.
