Weber State guard Miguel Tomley (3) drives against UC Irvine's Andre Henry (4) on Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, at the Dee Events Center in Ogden.

Weber State men’s basketball will be without senior guard Miguel Tomley indefinitely.

Tomley has battled a health issue and has stepped away from the team to address it, head coach Eric Duft said in a statement provided to the Standard-Examiner.

“We were informed that Miguel Tomley has been dealing with a serious medical situation for quite some time. While Miguel wanted desperately to make it through the season, the situation now requires immediate attention and he will be stepping away from basketball to focus on his health,” Duft said in the statement.

“We told him that our basketball family and university will support him in any way possible. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as he attacks this with the strength and competitiveness that has defined his career.”

With 11 regular-season games left, it’s unclear if Tomley will return to play.

Tomley, a 6-foot-3 guard, came to Weber State after two years at Idaho State. The native of Surrey, British Columbia, averaged 14 points per game in his final season at ISU while shooting a Big Sky-leading 38.3% and 2.5 makes per game from the 3-point line.

He was named to the 2024 Big Sky All-Tournament Team, scoring 22.3 points over three games, shooting 10 of 22 from deep and putting in 28 points to upset Northern Colorado.

Tomley was key in several non-conference wins for Weber State to open his fifth season of college basketball. The guard scored the game-winning bucket in Arizona to beat Bowling Green, then scored 28 points (second on his career list) the next day in a win over Pepperdine, shooting 6 of 7 from the 3-point line.

Two weeks later, his 21-point performance at Utah Tech included a buzzer-beating drive to claim another win.

But his current health concern may account for a dip in performance this season, with his scoring average dropping to 11.2 points per game while shooting 32% from the 3-point line against Division I opponents.

In six conference games, Tomley averaged 9.3 points while shooting 29.7% overall and 22.6% from the 3-point line. He did not play in Saturday’s win at Sacramento State.

Tomley has scored 1,141 points in 112 college games.

Weber State continues the season Thursday hosting Idaho in the first of four straight home games. It’s presumed sophomore Viljami Vartiainen, who scored a career-high 22 points Saturday, will continue to start in Tomley’s place at shooting guard.

Starting at $4.32/week.
