Weber State men’s basketball led for the first 33 minutes of its road game Thursday at Eastern Washington, looking for consecutive wins against Division I opponents for the first time in three months.

But Eastern rallied and led 60-55 with 2:55 left. After Nemanja Sarenac hit his third 3-pointer of the second half, Alex Tew — in the midst of a stellar game on both ends — made his mark. Tew scored on an entry from Threatt to tie it 60-60, blocked Mason Williams with help defense in the paint, and Threatt converted a tough drive to put Weber up 62-60 with 32 seconds left.

EWU guard Nic McClain corralled a missed-3 rebound and was fouled, reaching 10 points on 10-of-10 at the foul line to tie the game with 15.2 seconds remaining.

Weber cleared out for Threatt and his drive met backup post player Angelo Winkel, who erased his shot out of bounds. After review, referees determined 0.4 seconds remained on the game clock.

Inbounding from the baseline, Weber basically had one option. After some pre-pass action, Tew anchored in the paint and watched a high Threatt lob sky over Winkel. Even with Winkel holding him some, Tew rose and put perfect touch on his righty tip, sending the ball through the rim and Wildcats into an explosive celebration with a 64-62 victory.

Tew finished with a career-high 16 points, four rebounds, three steals, two assists, one block, a 6-of-6 night at the foul line, and several more deflections. Threatt added 14 points and seven assists on a cold shooting night for the Wildcats (22 of 51).

“We played horrible on offense, we missed some shots. The first half got in our mind a little bit but our motto now is we’ve got to find a way to win ugly,” WSU head coach Eric Duft said. “That’s what we did, and we’ll take it.”

Trevor Hennig finished with 12 points and Sarenac 11 for Weber State (11-19, 5-11 Big Sky).

Sebastian Hartmann led Eastern (10-19, 6-10) with 16 points and center Emmett Marquardt had 13 before fouling out late. EWU shot 17 of 40. The Eagles shot 22 of 25 from the foul line compared to Weber’s 16 of 19.

WSU opened the game on a 9-0 run and led from there until a Hartmann 3 capped a 12-4 run to put Eastern ahead 49-48 with 6:51 left. Weber got off the mat on Sarenac’s contested 3 to beat the shot clock and end the run, and the teams battled down the stretch.

Weber State next plays Saturday at Idaho before capping the regular season at home Monday for senior night against Northern Colorado.

WOMEN: WSU 67, EWU 65

OGDEN — Playing without star sophomore Taylor Smith for the third straight game due to concussion protocol, fourth-place Weber State women’s basketball got locked into a close battle with seventh-place Eastern Washington down the stretch Thursday in the Dee Events Center.

The margin was never larger than three points either way in the fourth quarter and Rose Bubakar’s two early-frame 3-pointers helped quell an EWU push and tie the game 57-57 with 5:50 left.

The teams nearly traded points every possession over the next four minutes until Eastern Washington’s 63-61 lead marked an end for the visitors.

Antoniette Emma-Nnopu scored in the paint, Kendra Parra and Lanae Billy made four free throws after crucial stops that included an Emma-Nnopu block with 13 seconds left, and the Wildcats won 67-65 to improve to 9-7 in the Big Sky.

The win puts Weber tied for third place and guarantees a top-five finish. And, at 2 p.m. Saturday, the Wildcats will play Idaho for outright third place after the Vandals lost at Idaho State.

Parra racked up 19 points, 10 assists and five rebounds for Weber State (12-14, 9-7 Big Sky). Bubakar added 18 points and 10 rebounds, going 3 of 5 from distance. Billy added 14 points on 4-of-8 3-point shooting, and Emma-Nnopu pitched in eight points and eight rebounds. Mata Peaua also scored eight points.

Freshman forward Kourtney Grossman totaled 15 points and 15 rebounds for Eastern Washington (10-18, 6-10).

Starting at $4.32/week.
