Weber State women’s basketball starts hot, hangs on in OT to beat Idaho State

By BRETT HEIN - Standard-Examiner | Feb 8, 2025

In a game Weber State women’s basketball led for a large majority, the Wildcats needed some heroic plays to force overtime for the second time this season against Idaho State and went on to a 79-76 victory in the extra period on Saturday afternoon in Pocatello.

The win improved WSU to 9-12 overall and 6-5 in the Big Sky. With seven conference games left, those six wins ties the team with the program-high over the last seven seasons (the 2021-22 team went 6-14 in league play).

Weber State started the contest shooting 6 of 8 from the 3-point line and ripped a 20-3 run on either side of the first-quarter break to take a 30-16 lead — capped when Taylor Smith and Rose Bubakar hit 3-pointers for the Wildcats.

WSU led for the next 24 1/2 minutes until consecutive 3-pointers from Sophia Covello put Idaho State ahead 57-56 with 8:27 left. Maria Dias put the home team up 69-65 on a 3-pointer with just 1:57 left and Weber’s game-long advantage was in peril.

But WSU kept ISU from scoring for the rest of regulation. Kendra Parra immediately answered with a basket on a falling-down drive to get it back within one possession.

With 3 seconds on the shot clock, WSU inbounded from the right wing to Smith, who drove around her defender baseline and banked in a lefty layup to beat the buzzer and tie it 69-69 with 18.5 seconds remaining.

Covello drove to the paint in the final seconds when Bubakar erased her shot attempt, sending the game to overtime.

Idaho State entered overtime at a foul disadvantage and WSU scored all 10 of its overtime points at the foul line, including six of the period’s first eight points to go up 75-71 with 3:07 left. Dias scored to make it 77-76 but Dakota Nap, with her only points of the game, went 2 of 2 at the foul line with 4 seconds left to seal the victory.

Covello led five Bengals (8-14, 3-8) in double figures with 14 points.

Smith led Weber State with 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Parra added 21 points. Lanae Billy added 11 points and Bubakar finished with 10. WSU shot 23 of 27 at the free-throw line.

Starting at $4.32/week.
