Former Weber State, BYU basketball player Jake Shoff dies in car crash
Former Weber State and BYU men’s basketball player Jake Shoff died Thursday after a car crash, both schools announced Friday.
Shoff died in a crash Thursday on Interstate 15 near the “point of the mountain” where Salt Lake and Utah counties meet, the Deseret News reports. According to the Utah Highway Patrol, Shoff’s car veered suddenly into a median and rolled onto its side, and UHP’s report says a medical emergency is currently considered a factor in the crash.
Reactions poured in on the social media site X after Ben Criddle, a brother-in-law to Shoff and a radio host in Utah County, posted about Shoff’s passing.
“His friendship was unmatched. He was an extraordinary sibling, the best brother anyone could ask for. He was the ultimate father,” Criddle wrote. “He was the most loving, caring and supportive husband. … He was the best of us!”
“I am speechless, one of the best teammates I ever had,” wrote Luiz Lemes, one of many teammates to reply. “All point guards should have a Big Man like Jake, on and off the court. He always had my back, at any time!!! Lots of prayers to the family.”
Shoff, 46, grew up in Davis County but graduated from American Fork High School. He began his college career at Weber State. In the 1997-98 and 2000-01 seasons, Shoff averaged 6.5 points and 4.2 rebounds over 55 games, starting 24.
The 6-foot-9 forward then played at BYU from 2002-04, averaging 2.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in 57 games in a bench role. He was a career 57.6% shooter, including a 75% clip in his final eight regular-season games, all wins. BYU went to the NCAA Tournament in both of Shoff’s seasons in Provo.
Shoff is survived by his wife, Emily, and sons Zach, Brady, Grant and Max.
