Second-quarter surge lifts Weber State women’s basketball to win at Nevada
Weber State women’s basketball got its breakthrough Friday night in Reno after a pair of three-point losses, punishing Nevada in a surging second quarter, then holding off a late Wolf Pack rally for a 66-62 win.
Senior forward Rose Bubakar led Weber State (2-3) with 18 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the 3-point line. Half of those points came on three of those triples in a second quarter during which WSU outscored Nevada 31-10.
The Wildcats shot 6 of 7 from distance in the quarter and 12 of 15 overall, cashing in on all five Nevada turnovers for 14 points. WSU forward Antoniette Emma-Nnopu scored a fastbreak layup to cap a 17-0 run during the quarter, and guard Rita Satini buried a triple with eight seconds left to give the Wildcats a 40-27 lead.
After a bucket from WSU sophomore post Taylor Smith to open the fourth quarter, Nevada pulled together a 14-3 run and took a 57-56 lead on an Audrey Roden 3-pointer with 5:10 left.
Kendra Parra free throws restored WSU to the lead and Smith scored a three-point play at the rim to put the visitors up 61-57. The Wildcats shot 5 of 6 at the foul line in the final minute to hang onto their first victory over a Division I opponent this season.
Smith scored 13 points for WSU. Emma-Nnopu added 11 points and nine rebounds. Satini totaled 11 points and five assists.
Roden, Dymonique Maxie and Rakiyah Jackson each scored 11 points for Nevada (2-3). Junior center Amelia Raidaveta, who transferred from Weber State to Nevada this offseason, scored two points in five minutes off the bench.
Weber State travels straight to Idaho to take on Boise State (5-0) at 2 p.m. Sunday.
