Weber State women’s basketball drops 81-78 road contest at Utah Tech
Weber State women’s basketball got a breakout performance from freshman forward Mata Peaua on Saturday night and senior guard Kendra Parra got hot from distance, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with two stellar Utah Tech performances as the Trailblazers won the in-state battle 81-78 in St. George.
Box Elder High alum and sixth-year senior Emily Isaacson, entering the season as Utah Tech’s all-time career leader in 3-point percentage in its NCAA era, shot 6 of 7 from distance and totaled 20 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Junior guard Chardonnay Hartley, a Harlem native and transfer from Longwood and Niagara, racked up 28 points and 12 assists while outdoing Weber State (10 of 17) at the free-throw line. Hartley alone shot 13 of 16 at the charity stripe.
The game was close throughout, with six ties and six lead changes. Weber State (1-3) got its last lead at 62-61 when forward Antoniette Emma-Nnopu scored with 7:46 left.
Ellie Taylor knocked down consecutive 3-pointers for Utah Tech to help the Trailblazers answer with its largest lead of the night, which it built to 74-63 with 4:14 left.
Parra and Kaitlin Burgess then each connected from deep to spark a Weber rally. Peaua scored inside and Rita Satini knocked down a pull-up jumper to make it 76-73 with 1:37 left.
Hartley answered with a tough midrange stepback and WSU couldn’t answer, missing a 3 and seeing a Lanae Billy offensive rebound and drive end when her scoop pass to Peaua went through her hands and out of bounds.
Peaua totaled 19 points, with 15 coming in the first half. Parra shot 6 of 11 from distance for 22 points. Taylor Smith scored 12 points. Billy added six points, seven rebounds and four assists. Emma-Nnopu totaled 10 rebounds.
Weber State racked up 19 offensive rebounds for 19 second-chance points, but that effort was negated by 20 turnovers leading to 29 Utah Tech points.
After going five years without making 10 or more 3-pointers in a game, Weber State totaled 12 3-pointers for the second time this season, going 12 of 34 (35.3%).
Those gains were also offset; Isaacson’s 6-of-7 night led Utah Tech to shoot 16 of 30 from behind the arc. Taylor shot 4 of 4 from deep to score 17 points.
Weber State’s next game is Friday when the Wildcats travel to play Nevada.
