Weber State soccer wins in finale; volleyball bounces back from home loss

By BRETT HEIN - Standard-Examiner | Oct 22, 2023

After a grueling season, Weber State women’s soccer finally got itself in the win column Sunday afternoon by taking a 3-0 victory over Idaho State in the season finale at Wildcat Soccer Field.

WSU finishes the season 1-9-5, with a 1-3-4 mark and seven points in Big Sky play. Had the Wildcats put in just one of their 10 shots on goal in a 0-0 draw with Sacramento State last week, WSU would have qualified for the Big Sky Tournament.

But Weber State ended the season on a high note with a shutout from Hadley Harris in goal. After giving up a slew of goals early in the season, the Wildcats finished with three straight shutouts and blanked opponents in four of their last five matches.

Grace Kirby scored in the 36th minute, assisted by Andelin Binford, to open the scoring Sunday. The Wildcats put the game away as it wore late. Ali Swenson ran down a ball forward and put it in low left in the 86th minute, and Samantha Kearns volleyed in a deep free kick over the ISU keeper after a Bengals yellow card one minute later to cap the scoring.

VOLLEYBALL IN SECOND PLACE

Weber State volleyball took a stunning home loss to Northern Colorado on Thursday before bouncing back to hammer Northern Arizona in three sets Saturday.

In front of nearly 700 fans Thursday, WSU took the first set 25-19 before the Bears took over. Northern Colorado served 11 aces and WSU hit just .116 for the match as the Bears claimed the final three sets 25-15, 25-18, 26-24.

“I think we got aced three times the entire road trip last week against really serving teams,” WSU coach Jeremiah Larsen said. “The fact that our serve receive was just absolutely horrid was kind of a shock.”

The Wildcats returned Saturday with improved serve receive. Northern Arizona tallied one ace and hit .102 as WSU won in a sweep 25-23, 25-11, 25-20.

Dani Richins and Baylee Bodily each had 12 kills. Kate Standifird led with three blocks, 37 assists and 18 digs.

Weber State (14-6, 7-2 Big Sky) is no longer knotted in first place, now sitting one game behind Sacramento State (8-1) but ahead of Montana State (6-3) after the Bobcats lost twice on the road.

“There’s tons of room to grow,” Larsen said. “Our consistency … is not where it needs to be. We have gigantic ebbs and flows that need to be smoothed out if we want to have any hope to be playing over Thanksgiving.”
