Weber State football: Reid named Big Sky player of week; WSU remains No. 13
A former walk-on linebacker scored his first career touchdown Saturday to help Weber State football overcome a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit to win at Northern Colorado.
And for that, senior Winston Reid is the Big Sky Conference defensive player of the week, the league announced Monday.
Reid totaled 10 tackles to lead WSU’s defense and, with help from a high-pressure defensive line, secured the game-winning score with just less than two minutes left, picking off a pass and returning it 40 yards for a touchdown.
Reid currently leads Big Sky and is 10th in the country in tackles at 10.8 per game. He is also second in the conference in tackles for loss with 5.5.
WSU STAYS AT 13
Weber State remains at No. 13 in the latest STATS FCS Top 25 after the victory in the poll released Monday.
The Wildcats (3-2, 1-1 Big Sky) escaped an upset with a weekend full of them — namely, No. 2 North Dakota State, No. 5 William & Mary, and No. 6 Holy Cross all lost to unranked teams.
The Big Sky now occupies most of the top five thanks to those results: After No. 1 South Dakota State held serve against No. 12 North Dakota, the rest of the top 10 is as follows: Montana State, Idaho, Sacramento State, Furman, Southern Illinois, North Dakota State, Incarnate Word, Delaware, and William & Mary.
Montana checks in at No. 17, UC Davis at No. 20 and Eastern Washington at No. 22.
The Wildcats next host Northern Arizona and UC Davis in consecutive weeks.
DEPTH CHART
Weber State’s two-deep for the Northern Arizona game remains mostly the same as the depth chart has looked for most of the season.
This week, junior linebacker Garrett Beck is now listed as the starter at strong-side linebacker with sophomore Jayden Ah You behind him. Both have seen plenty of reps this season but Beck was lined up all over the field in the fourth quarter against Northern Colorado last week.
