Weber State football is up to No. 16 in this week’s STATS FCS Top 25 released Monday.

The Wildcats moved up after a 41-5 win over Western Oregon while Southern Illinois lost to Incarnate Word and Kennesaw State was handled by Samford.

Around the Big Sky, teams in the top 10 remained where they were after wins: Montana at No. 3, Montana State at No. 4 and Sacramento State at No. 7.

Eastern Washington moved up one spot to No. 12 after eking out a home win over Tennessee State.

MORE FOOTBALL NOTES

Weber State’s game this week at Utah State (5 p.m. Saturday) was not picked up by any Mountain West Conference TV partners and will stream online on the conference’s digital streaming site themw.com/watch.

Haze Hadley’s six punt returns for 131 yards last week against Western Oregon was not only the second-best, single-game yardage mark in WSU history, it was also the top punt-return performance in all of Division I football for the week.

Senior cornerback Marque Collins, who did not play in the opener, will again be out this week at Utah State, head coach Jay Hill said Tuesday. And, as feared, senior running back Kevin Smith Jr.’s injury in the last days of fall camp was a season-ending, lower-leg injury, Hill said.

SOCCER GETS FIRST WIN

After taking a tough 1-0 loss at home to Kansas State on Thursday, Weber State women’s soccer tripped to California for a Sunday morning, 2-1 victory at UC Riverside to get in the win column for the first time this season.

Freshman midfielder Samantha Kearns scored in the 24th minute, assisted by Morgan Furmaniak and Grace Kirby.

Just before halftime, junior midfielder Gentrey Gibson put one home to get the Wildcats up 2-0.

Riverside scored in the opening moments out of halftime but WSU held on.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hadley Whiting got the start, recoring one save.

Weber State continues its road-heavy schedule with games at Pacific on Thursday and at Utah Tech on Sunday.

VOLLEYBALL TOPS ST. JOHN’S

Weber State volleyball went 1-2 against a stout field in the Rebel Challenge at UNLV over the weekend.

The Wildcats fell in a competitive, 3-1 loss to hosts UNLV by scores of 17-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-23. The Rebels are 5-1, with their only loss to Miami, the team that won all three games in the event.

Weber State lost 3-1 to Miami, handing the Hurricanes their first set loss of the season.

WSU’s win came Friday against St. John’s, a 3-1 victory by scores of 25-18, 25-15, 14-25, 25-21. Freshman Ashley Gneiting led the Wildcats with 16 kills. Dani Richins had 13 kills and 10 digs. Baylee Bodily totaled 10 kills, and Emma Mangum added seven kills and three blocks. Kate Standifird totaled 38 assists.

Weber State next plays another road tournament in California where it will face UC Irvine, Gonzaga and Cal State Fullerton from Sept. 8-10.

Starting at $4.32/week.
