Weber State softball takes 2 from Montana to stay in 1st place, reach 30 wins
OGDEN — Weber State softball survived a final-inning rally in Game 1, then used the bats to pull away from Montana in Game 2 to sweep a truncated series Saturday at Wildcat Softball Field, remain undefeated in Big Sky play and reach 30 wins for the season.
Friday’s scheduled doubleheader was nixed due to field conditions as it rained or snowed every day this week leading up to Saturday. The two teams turned Saturday’s scheduled game into a doubleheader to salvage one of the games lost from Friday.
The Wildcats (30-8, 8-0 Big Sky) play their final nonconference game Tuesday, April 19, hosting Utah in a rubber match before hitting the final stretch of conference play.
Portland State (24-14, 8-4) rose to second place behind the pitching of Olivia Grey, sweeping last-place Southern Utah (3-32, 0-12) this week.
Sacramento State (22-18, 6-3) and Northern Colorado (17-23, 5-4) are in third and fourth places.
WSU 6, UM 5
Arissa Henderson picked up her 11th win of the season in the circle, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out five in five innings, to lead WSU in Game 1.
Faith Hoe scored on a wild pitch and Henderson on a passed ball in the first inning. Henderson made it 3-0 in the second with an RBI single, and Hoe pushed it to 4-0 with an RBI single in the third.
Maygen McGrath got Montana (17-20, 5-6) on the board with a solo no-doubter in the fourth inning.
In the sixth, Lauren Hoe beat out a throw at first that would have ended the inning on a double play, and the ball then got away from first base, allowing Chloe Camarero to score. Katelyn Whiting singled hard up the middle to score Lauren Hoe to make it 6-2.
Weber State needed every one of those runs. In the top of the seventh, McGrath singled in two runs with the bases loaded but Mia Rushton threw out Kendall Curtis at third base during the play for the second out. After another RBI single made it 6-5 and put the go-ahead run on base, WSU’s Mariah Ramirez struck out Kelly Sweyer looking to end the game.
WSU 10, UM 5
In Saturday’s second game, Mandy Sink got the win in the circle, allowing four runs in five innings, but it wasn’t as clear-cut as the wire-to-wire win that preceded it.
McGrath homered again for Montana for a 1-0 lead in the first. Faith Hoe answered with a solo shot that clanged off the scoreboard in right-center to tie it, but the Griz regained a 2-1 lead in the second.
WSU took the lead for good in the bottom of the second, scoring on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly before Henderson singled in a run to go up 4-2.
Emily Ruhl drove in two more with a single in the fourth to make it 6-2. But Montana appeared ready to answer again with two run-scoring singles for a 6-4 tally in the top of the fifth.
That was short-lived. Rushton drove in a run with a single, then stole second in a double-steal that plated Makayla Donahoo. Henderson capped WSU’s scoring with a three-run homer to center, her seventh of the season at the plate, to make it 10-4.
Henderson batted 3 for 6 with four RBIs between the two games and pitched seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out eight.
