Ogden Raptors take 2 of 3 from Vibes, lose in Monday Knockout
The Ogden Raptors snapped a losing streak with two straight wins Saturday and Sunday at Lindquist Field, then dropped the series finale against Rocky Mountain with a Knockout Round defeat to the visiting Vibes.
The Raptors (38-52, 16-26 second half) finish the 2024 season hosting a six-game series against the Glacier Range Riders (45-45, 16-26), the third-year Pioneer League team making its first-ever appearance in Ogden.
That series begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, with 6:30 starts through Saturday. The season concludes with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Sept. 8.
VIBES 10, RAPTORS 9 (KO)
The Raptors coughed up an 8-5 lead entering the final inning, salvaged a tie with a run in the bottom of the ninth, and lost the series finale Monday afternoon in a Knockout Round tiebreaker.
No details about the tiebreaker derby were available.
Ogden kept the carousel turning for four runs in the seventh inning, with Elliott Good’s two-RBI single preceding one-run singles from Cole Jordan and Chris Sargent, putting the home team ahead 6-3.
Raptors starter Chris Macca had a solid start there, but remained in the game and pitched a leadoff walk in the top of the eighth before exiting. Kurtis Byrne and Eddie McCabe singled in a run each to cut it to 6-5.
The Raptors loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth but could only manage two runs on sacrifice flies from Logan Williams, the 2023 title-winning catcher who recently rejoined the team, and Jordan.
With an 8-5 lead in hand, closer Dylan Matsuoka gave up a double, four singles and hit a batter as the Vibes took a 9-8 lead. Drew Brutcher got Ogden to the Knockout Round with a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the ninth.
RAPTORS 16, VIBES 8
Ogden outfielder Jack Cone hit 5 for 5 with two homers, a double, six RBIs and four runs scored from the Raptors’ leadoff spot to key a big win Sunday afternoon.
Cone homered in consecutive innings: a two-run dinger in the second put Ogden ahead 4-2, and a two-run homer in the third made it 9-3.
It didn’t get closer than that margin all night, despite Steven Rivas going yard twice for the Vibes and driving in four. That gave him 30 homers on the season, second in the league, and he finished the series with a league-leading 118 RBIs.
Nico Saltaformaggio got the win, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out five in five innings. Brayden Bonner added two scoreless relief innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.
RAPTORS 12, VIBES 8
A late-season addition helped the Raptors get back into the win column Saturday after eight straight losses.
Sam Plash, who had one hit as Ogden’s designated hitter Saturday night, hit a three-run homer to spark a six-run third inning.
Elliott Good added a two-run double in the third, putting Ogden ahead 8-1.
Rocky Mountain cut that to 8-5 in the top of the fourth, and a Connor Bagnieski solo homer helped the Raptors answer to make it 10-5 after four.
