By BRETT HEIN - Standard-Examiner | Jun 19, 2024

For the second straight night, the Ogden Raptors racked up a big, early lead on the way to 20-plus runs in a blowout win at Grand Junction.

This time, Wednesday’s final finished at 21-5 as the Raptors took Game 2 of the six-game series against the Jackalopes at Suplizio Field.

Ogden (11-15) and Grand Junction (8-18) play again at 6:35 p.m. Thursday.

Matthew Hess turned in a good start for the Raptors, allowing three runs on three hits over six innings, striking out three and walking three. Those were the only walks Ogden pitchers issued on the night.

Grand Junction pitchers, meanwhile, surrendered 21 hits and handed out 13 walks.

A two-RBI double from Landen Barns capped Ogden’s second consecutive four-run inning for an 8-1 lead after two frames. The Raptors put the game away at 14-3 with a five-run fourth, keyed by a two-run single from Connor Bagnieski.

Bagnieski hit 4 for 6 with five RBIs. Barns drove in three and joined Jack Cone, Christopher Sargent and Cole Jordan with three hits apiece. Barns tripled and doubled; Ogden’s 19 other hits were singles.

Shane Gustafson, Brayden Bonner and Quinn Waterhouse each threw one relief inning for the Raptors, combining to strike out eight. Gustafson gave up three straight hits, allowing two runs, in the seventh before striking out the side, and Waterhouse struck out the side in the ninth.

Waterhouse has thrown 14 2/3 scoreless innings this season.

Andres Rios was Grand Junction’s lone multi-hit batter, totaling three of the team’s 10 hits. Starting pitcher Elijah Johnson allowed 14 runs (only six earned) on 10 hits and seven walks over 3 2/3 innings.
