Raptors can’t rally for a third time, drop finale against Vibes 7-3
The Ogden Raptors fell behind 4-0 early for the third straight contest to close a three-game home set against the Rocky Mountain Vibes but, at least for one night, the team’s late-inning rally power dried up.
The Vibes claimed a 7-3 victory Wednesday at Lindquist Field in front of 5,348 fans.
Ogden (24-27, 2-1 second half) and Rocky Mountain (22-27, 1-2) travel Thursday to Colorado Springs where they’ll play three more games, Friday through Sunday.
The Vibes again opened the game hitting longballs before the hot summer air cooled at sundown. Steven Rivas and Dane Tofteland each homered off Ogden starter Nico Saltaformaggio, and Mason Sykes added an RBI single, to put the visitors up 4-0 three outs into the game.
That was homer 19 for Rivas, currently second in the Pioneer League.
Rivas added an RBI single in the second. With Shawn Triplett pitching, Ernie Yake doubled in two runs to put Rocky Mountain up 7-0 after six innings.
One of those runs was Saltaformaggio’s, who allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits, striking out four and walking one in five innings. Triplett (three innings, two hits) and Jon Rice otherwise kept the Vibes at bay across the final four innings.
Ogden did get going in the eighth when Pearce Howard led off with a double. After two walks, the Raptors scored two runs on an error at third base.
Chris Sargent hit his ninth homer of the year, a solo shot, in the eighth to cap the scoring.
The Raptors didn’t have any other late-inning magic. Trey Morrill took the mound after Sargent’s home run and retired all five batters he faced to end the game.
Kelsey Ward got the win for Rocky Mountain, throwing five scoreless innings while allowing six hits, striking out six and walking one.
