Boys soccer: Buttars beats buzzer with header; Roy edges Clearfield for region win

ROY — Eighty minutes was not long enough to decide a high school boys soccer match between Roy and Clearfield on Tuesday afternoon.

Ninety minutes proved to be enough time, down to a fraction of a microsecond.

Roy senior Brayden Buttars scored on a header with 0.0 showing on the clock at the end of the first session of extra time and the Royals clipped the Falcons 1-0 in a Region 5 thriller.

“In high school soccer, as soon as the clock ends, it ends. I guess it went in … buzzer-beater, is what you could call it,” Buttars said. “Playing 80 minutes without a goal and going into overtime for another 10 minutes, it’s whoever wants it more, really.”

Buttars’ golden goal came from a throw-in by senior center back Sam Bischoff.

“We have scored on that play before, but not this year. Sam was throwing it, trying to get it in the box and luckily we got it to go,” Buttars said. “I stood back post and saw the ball come and went for it. I put a head on it and it went in the goal. It was a rough game, but good to finish and win in overtime.

“I’m a senior and a captain and wanted to take a role and make a big play happen.”

The winning goal broke up a scoreless tie between Roy senior keeper Colby Frokjer and Clearfield sophomore goalie Bryce Peterson.

Frokjer starred on the same field for the Royals as a top-notch football player, then turned his attention to the pitch this spring.

“Soccer isn’t my main sport, but I just like to come out here and have fun with the boys,” Frokjer said. “Be athletic … and fast reflexes — like playing wide receiver out there — like I usually do. It’s nothing too much different for me.”

Roy’s (4-3, 3-1 Region 5) defense made things easy on Frokjer on Tuesday.

“Our defense is so solid; they play together super well,” Frokjer said “I’m confident in them. I kind of chill back there because there’s nothing for me to do. They stop everybody. They’ve played great the last couple of games.”

The Royals’ defense had to be special because Clearfield (2-3, 2-2) and Peterson kept the Royals off the scoreboard for 89 minutes, 59.9 seconds on their side.

“I didn’t even see the clock. I had no idea what time it was. We just didn’t check our shoulders a little bit more on that last play,” Peterson said. “I was happy with our defense today. They were shutting them down, clearing the ball.”

Peterson was sporting an ice pack on his lower right leg, the result of an injury suffered late in the first half, but he gutted it out and limped valiantly through the rest of the match.

“It happened when they had a breakaway and I had to go out. My leg got stuck between a defender and their attacker, but I was still able to get a foot on it and kick it out,” Peterson said. “It’s been hurting since, but I pushed through it.”

Sophomore forward Asher Hunt nearly won the game for the Royals on a goal with 21 seconds remaining in regulation, but the referees waived it off due to a penalty.

“I think our guy tugged him a little bit, but it’s fine. We still won,” Buttars said.
