ROY — Luke Pack, finding the net with his forehead with 12 minutes to go in Weber’s season opener against defending 5A runner-up Roy, led the Warriors to a 1-0 win on Monday at Sand Ridge Park.

Pack spotted fellow senior Alex Johnson, warming his boot near midfield, and waded through Royals (0-1) goalkeeper Colby Frokjer (six saves) and defender Owen Garmire for the late plug.

The Warriors (1-0) clung to their late lead, claiming a chilly opener 20 minutes across town.

“I saw he had space and knew it’d be a 50/50 with the keeper,” Pack said. “Luckily I beat (Frokjer) to the ball and it ended up in the back of the net.”

In his 10th season, Roy coach Craig Charlesworth scheduled Weber specifically to give his group, which returns eight seniors from a program one match shy of a state title a year ago, a true test atop the regular-season schedule.

Charlesworth is looking for more decisiveness from his attack after Monday’s opener.

“They had good opportunities and they took them at the right time,” Charlesworth said. “It’s early and we haven’t had a lot of prep time but we’d like them to be ready here in the next couple of games. That’s why we packed three (matches) in the first week against some tough teams.”

Weber hosts Sky View on Wednesday; Roy travels to Davis. Both matches begin at 3:30 p.m.
