PLAIN CITY — The Weber High girls basketball bench erupted when freshman Bradey Schiffman came up with an overtime-forcing putback at Fremont on Friday night, but left the court in far different spirits after coming up short 60-55 for their second region loss.

Down 13 at halftime, the Warriors (9-7, 1-2 Region 1) rallied back behind seniors Abby Sayer (19 points) and Katelyn Poulsen (11 points) for a mood-swinging fourth quarter. Schiffman found herself in the right spot to correct Sayer’s missed layup attempt and force extra minutes.

Fremont (15-1, 3-0) mustered up the shots it needed over the next four minutes, including two game-clinching free throws by Abigail Christensen (21 points) that put the Wolves up five with 10 seconds remaining.

“We knew Weber was going to be a tough team this year, and they proved that tonight,” Fremont head coach Lisa Dalebout said. “I felt like we battled for four quarters plus. We had girls step up and make big plays when we needed them, and got a great team win tonight.”

Christensen’s trip to the line came on the back of a 3-pointer by sophomore Jersie Slater — her first points of the night — and a gutsy and-one basket put home by senior Sophie Valdez.

For Weber, Sayer split her overtime free throws (3 of 6) to finish 10 of 14 overall from the stripe.

Weber head coach Trevor Howell said the experience, no matter how much it burns, has value in the end.

“(I’m) super proud of the way the girls fought,” Howell said. “It was a rough first half. Credit to Fremont and their defense. We competed like crazy that second half and gave ourselves a chance. That’s what we stress and teach is to stick with the process and see what happens.

“It was a great environment and a really fun game to be a part of.”

Fremont dominated defensively throughout the first half, holding Weber to just 10 points through the first 16 minutes.

Sophomore Mia McArthur finished with 10 points for the Wolves; sophomore Olivia Surrage and junior Maya Jensen each added eight points.

Fremont travels to Syracuse in a Region 1 bout on Tuesday, Jan. 21; Weber welcomes in Layton.

Weber boys dominate second quarter, then Fremont

PLAIN CITY — Weber boys basketball had a bit more than the decibel meter working for them on Friday night.

Traveling 20 minutes from Pleasant View, the Warriors dominated Fremont 72-50 on the road to enter the weekend in the win column after splitting their first pair of region contests. Trailing by a basket at the end of the first quarter, Weber turned on the jets and never looked back.

Weber (11-5, 2-1 Region 1) listed five names in double-digit scoring with seniors Luke Bingham and Ben Olpin each dropping 17 points. Junior Ryder Howe scored 12 points. Senior Brandon Crockett and junior Thomas Packer contributed 10 points each.

“It all started on defense,” Bingham said. “Everyone did their job on defense and that’s why we won this game. We ran them out of the gym after that.”

Fremont (4-12, 0-2), led by senior Easton Duft (14 points) and freshman Cam Campbell (13 points), opened the night leaning on three 3-pointers by the freshman shooting guard. The Wolves managed just seven points in the second quarter as Weber took command.

Things devolved for the Wolves during the third quarter as Weber found support from all corners of the floor. Packer and Howe led the Warriors on a 33-point quarter of basketball, with Fremont’s best answer coming in the form of seven Duft free throws.

Weber hosts Layton on Tuesday, Jan. 21; Fremont travels to Syracuse.
