SALT LAKE CITY — Wasted chances and a rising turnover margin ultimately spelled the end of the line for No. 6 Davis, falling to No. 7 Lone Peak 66-48 in the 6A girls basketball state semifinals Wednesday at the Huntsman Center.
A hampered roster — including junior T’Maea Eteuati who led the Darts (17-7) with 13 points, five rebounds and two steals a game removed from an ankle injury suffered Monday against Westlake — found itself burdened across the floor when the second half arrived.
Trailing by as much as 14 in the first half, Davis reeled Lone Peak within seven on three consecutive scoring drives by sophomore Kate Willard (12 points) heading into halftime. But the second half brought even fewer breaks defensively and eight more turnovers (14 total).
Davis coach Nicole Waddoups, well aware of her fatigued roster and the competition in front of her group, said most of Tuesday was spent exploring a 2-3 offense she felt would give the Darts, ending the game 17 of 36 from the field, enough looks to keep pace with the Knights.
At the end of the day, Lone Peak collected 14 points in transition.
“Health-wise, we couldn’t match their energy level,” Waddoups said. “We couldn’t run our offense, and that’s what it really came down to. They just ran out of gas.”
Sydney Plummer (six points) helped the Darts get out front 5-0 early but Lone Peak quickly caused problems from similar range. Zuri Nordstrom (11 points), shooting 3 of 4 beyond the arc in the first half, pushed the Knights up nine by the end of the first quarter.
Eteauti added the Darts’ second 3-point basket atop the second quarter and Davis exchanged answers clear to halftime. Willard’s 6-0 run closing the first half made it 40-33 going into the locker room.
But Lone Peak emerged with its foot firmly on the pedal, beginning the third quarter on a 6-0 run and demanding a timeout from Waddoups and the Darts. Little was getting through one another in those first minutes back, Eteauti said.
“We were getting called on screens and pretty confused if we were switching or not, so I’d say it comes down to communication,” Eteauti said. “As a team, that’s a huge part which sucks because we communicated every other game pretty well until (today).”
The Knights received three whistles on shooting fouls in the moments following the timeout as Kennedy Woolston (12 points) and Tati Harness (12 points) built a 21-point advantage when the fourth quarter arrived. Lone Peak finished the day shooting 11 of 15 from the stripe.
Davis ended the second half shooting a perfect 4 of 4 on free throws but with little to offer from the field with a 5-of-16 mark through the final 16 minutes of basketball. Senior Mari Nichols (10 points) added six of her points in the second half.
Davis’ semifinal lapse doesn’t take away from Davis’ four outgoing seniors — Plummer, Nichols, Aubrey Simons and Maki West — and their contributions over the past four seasons, Waddoups said. The first-year Davis coach reserved praise for each of her four seniors in the moments following Tuesday’s loss.
“I can’t say enough good about them,” Waddoups said. “We’re a family and it’s been my senior group of leadership that’s made that happen.”
