Syracuse’s Jackson Spencer wins 3200 meters at prestigious Simplot Games
Syracuse High junior Jackson Spencer won the boys 3200-meter race Saturday as part of a Northern Utah contingent to compete at the prestigious Simplot Games indoor invitational hosted at Idaho State University.
Spencer ran a time of 8:56.03 to win his event.
“It made me feel special,” said Spencer, in a news release, about the cheering of the crowd as he crossed the finish line. “Next year, I’m going for the 8:48 meet record.”
More than 2,000 athletes from the United States, Canada and Australia competed at this year’s Simplot Games, the 45th edition of the event long considered the premier indoor invitational for high school track and field.
Layton High’s Burklie Burton threw a second-place finish in the girls shot put.
Bonneville High School’s Avery Barton finished fifth in the girls 1600-meter race. Layton’s Alice Wilhelm took third in the 1600 freshman race.
West Field sophomore Hailey Atwater finished sixth in the girls 800.
A Layton team finished fourth in the girls 4×400 relay.
On the boys side, Bonneville High’s Davis DeGroot jumped to a second-place finish in the long jump.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Davis High’s Caleb Flint finished fifth. Fremont’s Max Oliver was fifth in the high jump.
Weber High’s Garrison Johnson ran for a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run.
Layton’s Parker Harris took sixth in the freshman 1600 meters.
