SALT LAKE CITY — Managing just six looks at the net in the first quarter, No. 4 Fremont girls basketball failed to reverse course against No. 5 Bingham and fell 72-38 during the 6A quarterfinals nightcap played late Monday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

What started as a fast-paced exchange, expected amongst almost any program amped to remain among the state’s elite eight, soon soured for the Silverwolves in a season-ending defeat for a young squad that made waves throughout its 21-4 campaign.

Bingham (18-7) will meet No. 1 Copper Hills in the semifinals on Wednesday; No. 6 Davis and No. 7 Lone Peak will battle for the remaining state championship seat.

Abigail Christensen led Fremont with a game-high 22 points and team-high six rebounds; Bingham recorded four double-digit scorers in Addy Horsley (18 points), Evy Roberts (14 points), Raylynn Richardson (13 points) and Lena Casperson (12 points) while shooting 28 of 45 as a collective including 12 of 17 from distance.

By comparison, Fremont shot 12 of 39 from the field, including 4 of 14 from 3-point land and 10 of 16 at the charity stripe.

With so little working offensively, Fremont head coach Lisa Dalebout realized the moment of a state quarterfinal was beyond her team.

“When you get to this type of venue, it’s a little overwhelming,” Dalebout said “I thought that was seniors versus sophomores. They had a lot of seniors that played, honestly, mature and played lights out tonight. We didn’t help ourselves by giving them so many open shots.”

Bingham opened the night hot from the floor, enjoying the 3-point shooting of Stacia Peoples, registering one of the Miners’ five first-half 3s early on, en route to a 28-12 advantage by the end of the first quarter.

Without a groove offensively, Fremont quickly stared down an 18-point deficit with five minutes still to play in the half. Christensen knocked down consecutive 3-point baskets in conjunction with a pair of late stops by the Silverwolves defense, but Bingham still left the half up 40-23.

Reflecting on the first half, Dalebout hoped her halftime discussions could’ve generated a couple of ideas for calming down their attack and finding reasonable chances at the rim. That didn’t happen, and the Miners doubled down offensively to shoot 11 of 16 in the second half.

“I thought we’d come out of the second half and be able to score the ball a little bit better,” Dalebout said. “We just couldn’t get anyone going besides (Christensen). Credit to Bingham, I can’t remember the last time my team ever gave up 72 points.”

No third-quarter run existed for the Silverwolves, instead entering the fourth quarter down 28, Bingham’s largest lead yet, on Richardson’s second 3-point bomb of the night.

With the loss, Fremont ends the season with plenty of firepower returning to next season’s prospective roster but outgoing seniors Sophie Valdez and Avary Post undoubtedly leave shoes to fill around the wing.

Dalebout tipped her cap to both seniors for restoring part of the program that, in her opinion, had gone missing last season.

“At this stage in their development, it should really bug them all summer,” Dalebout said. “Both of the seniors, (Valdez) and (Post), I think they re-established Fremont basketball for us. They played unselfishly all year. … What they did for our program is re-establish it so hopefully we’ll be back and retooled and able to come out and finish a little bit different next year.”

EMERY 44, MORGAN 30

OREM — Two long droughts spelled doom for No. 4 Morgan in a 3A quarterfinals defeat to No. 5 Emery late Monday night at UVU.

Morgan (14-11) went 8:52 of game time before recording a field goal and finished shooting 17% from the field.

In the second half, Eva Birkeland scored at the rim to cut Morgan’s deficit to 24-19 at the 6:50 mark of the third quarter. Emery (15-10) embarked on a 15-0 run that included Kabree Gordon’s fourth 3-pointer of the game. Morgan scored just two points in the third.

Morgan opened the fourth quarter with full-court pressure and half-court traps, and held Emery to two points for the first seven minutes of the frame. Zoe Rockenfield scored seven of her team-high 12 points in the fourth and her 3-pointer made it 39-29 with 2:57 left. But the Trojans couldn’t find the net again and shot 2 of 8 at the foul line in the frame.

Rockenfield added five rebounds to her 12 points for Morgan. Ashley Burt scored seven points and Birkeland six, with Keira Brewer pulling down 12 rebounds.

Katelyn Nielson was a tough guard in the post and led all scorers with 16 points, adding nine rebounds for Emery. Gordon had seven rebounds with her 12 points.
