Bear River's Janessa Esquivel gets up after surviving the first overtime of the 125-pound title match with Keagan Grange (Ridgeline) during the 4A girls wrestling state championship on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025, at the UCCU Center in Orem.

OREM — In four years, Kristina Kent lost only one match across her career.

As a freshman, Kent unknowingly pinned herself in what would become her only defeat against any opposition in the regular season or state tournament. Saturday, the Davis senior hung her fourth state title by winning the 6A 105-pound girls wrestling championship at the UCCU Center.

Receiving a first-round bye, Kent won her quarterfinal and semifinal matches by fall before defeating Westlake’s Ashlyn Ballantyne by technical fall (2:46) in the championship. She was one of the Darts’ two title holders, joining Alejandra Martinez winning the 135-pound championship, to exit the arena as a state champion.

Asked about the 14-year-old Kent versus the outgoing senior Kent, the Davis star reflected on just how much knowledge she garnered during four seasons with head coach Malia Roundy. Kent’s remained unbeaten for three consecutive seasons, including a perfect 46-0 finish to her senior campaign.

“I never realized how little I understood was going on,” Kent said. “I just didn’t know what I was doing back then. I hope I feel the same way now in a few years and see how much growth I’ve had as I’m a little bit older.

Davis finished fourth overall on Saturday, beating out neighboring Syracuse — fronting 110-pound champion Payton Gines — by six points in the final tally.

Teammate Millie Leib finished as the 120-pound runner-up, falling short to Layton’s Brynlee Sorensen in the championship round. Eliza Davis, defeating Fremont’s Kenley Thomas, finished in third place on the consolation side of the 140-pound bracket.

Kent said the intensity her team’s poured into the past four years, leading up to her final state tournament on the campus of Utah Valley University, cannot be understated.

“There’s not a better group I would’ve loved to come here with,” Kent said. “We’ve been putting in extra hours after practice for four years now, especially some of those seniors, but there’s been (underclassmen) that’ve been incredible. I love them more than anyone.”
