PLEASANT VIEW — Basketball purists will extol the problems that height presents in the paint for an opposing team.

But these traditionalists are not used to bigs who can also step out beyond the 3-point arc and fire away from long distance.

That was the issue Weber faced against Fremont in a high school girls game Friday night.

Fremont boasts a starting front line of two 6-foot-2 players (sophomore Abby Christensen and junior Maya Jensen) and another at 6-foot-4 in senior Avary Post.

The Silverwolves dominated inside and out, sweeping the Region 1 series against the Warriors with a 61-34 wipeout.

“We’re so long that we get rebounds and crash the boards; an advantage of length,” Christensen said. “Our height gives us second-chance shots; we’re good shooters as well. We can get inside or kick it out.”

That’s evidenced by Christensen, who splashed home a trio of 3-pointers, and Post, who knocked down two treys on the night.

“We work on 3s in practice and get lots of good shots up … know we can make them. We have confidence to shoot it,” Christensen said. “Coach (Lisa Dalebout) says if you’re open, take the shot.”

Fremont (18-3, 6-2 Region 1) took a 15-9 lead after one quarter, paced by Christensen who had 10 points on two 3-pointers and four free throws as she swept the paint and the parking lot.

Sophomore guard Brynn Wadman came off the bench for Fremont and made two free throws at end of the first period, then nailed a pair of 3s in the second stanza, scoring eight at the half, as Fremont led 30-15 at the break.

“I try to focus on what the coaches ask us to do, like boxing out and rebounding; the rest comes when you focus on defense,” Wadman said. “The offense follows; I’m a shooter, and coach tells me to shoot it.”

Sophomore guard Olivia Surrage led the Silverwolves with all seven of her points in the third quarter and the lead bulged to 46-20 after three.

Fremont scored 15 more points in the fourth quarter for an amazingly consistent effort (15, 15, 16, 15) on the offensive end.

“Everyone can step up and make shots and good moves; that’s something we’ve been working on and we’re kind of peaking right now,” Christensen said. “We know the (shots) are going in; that’s something cool about our team right now.”

Christensen netted a game-high 21 points for Fremont, while Wadman added 15, including four 3-pointers.

On the defensive side, Fremont held Weber to single digits in each of the first three quarters when it mattered most.

“We played together today, especially on defense … we were helping. The biggest stat was rebounding; we didn’t let them get second-chance shots,” Christensen said.

Weber senior guard Abby Sayer has had a good look at the Silverwolves over the years.

“They’re really lengthy; they’ve been a good team for so long. It’s fun playing against that challenge for me and trying to figure out how we can penetrate the middle or how we can get an open shot off,” Sayer said. “If they’re in a zone, get in the gaps; if they’re man, you can go one on one and ‘iso’ them and get to the hoop.

“The rivalry makes these games so fun; the competition makes the game so exciting,” Sayer added.

Sayer was the only Warrior (10-11, 2-6) in double figures with 11 points. Freshman Bradey Schiffman and junior center Rylee Jugler had six points apiece.

Over the past few region seasons, Fremont has faced big games with Syracuse and Davis, so Wadman tries to keep the Weber rivalry in perspective.

“We try to take all games the same. Some are tougher than others, but a win is a win. It’s the same as winning any other game,” Wadman said.

Starting at $4.32/week.
