KAYSVILLE — If the Hollywood sign weren’t already firmly planted in Los Angeles, Kaysville could certainly make its case for the landmark following a drama-filled series ending with Davis squeezing around Layton 7-6 on a three-run, walk-off single by Carter Garrett.

Squandering a 4-1 lead in the seventh, Davis (13-6, 8-2 Region 1) quickly altered the mood on a Wally Grant single and Jaxon Marble reaching via error. When Layton closer Kaleb Hall walked Brody McGuire, Tanner Jensen hopped off the Davis bench to pinch run.

Garrett dropped a hard-hit ball into right field for a single and Ethan Clark’s throw sailed clear toward the Lancer dugout. Spotting the error, Jensen rounded second and turned on the jets.

“I was running around second, and I just saw coach yelling ‘Get to third, get to third!’ Jensen said. “Once I get to third, he said, ‘the ball’s going out, the ball’s past the catcher.’ I heard him say it’s in the dugout, it’s out of play, and I get the bag.

“That last inning was crazy but it’s what I love about the game.”

With the start, Grant (6.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) entered the seventh unscathed but for one run scored by Layton’s Caleb Jackson during the third. Lincoln Green tied things up 1-1 by the fourth.

A scary scene followed when Davis’ Cayman Sanchez, stealing second, collapsed when Layton starter Andres Cedeno’s pick-off throw struck the baserunner in the neck. Sanchez returned to the game safely after a short delay.

Davis managed a bit of insurance on a passed ball throw by Cedeno in the fifth, as well as a disputed two-run homer by Kaleb Weaver hit off Hall in the sixth. Weaver, originally hitting a three-run homer, was ruled out for not stepping on first while rounding the bases.

“When you’re up there, you don’t hear anything,” Cedeno said. “Just play the game… (Davis) is a really good hitting team. A really good hitter I like is Kaleb Weaver. I wish I could’ve thrown more strikes to him, but I walked him three times.”

Davis erased deficits three times Friday afternoon, including Layton’s five-run seventh inning powered by a Cedeno two-RBI single.

Grant handed the ball to reliever Croydon Christensen with two outs in the top of the seventh. Christensen and the Darts (13-6, 7-2) held Layton’s rally at five runs and returned to the plate with some fireworks for their ace.

“He is, in my opinion, one of the best pitchers in the state,” Garrett said of Grant. “He goes in there and just shuts down.”

“I have 100% confidence in him,” Jensen added. “Throws one bad pitch, doesn’t worry about it and gets the next one. He’s always attacking the next pitch, the next batter, and the next out.”

Davis begins a four-game series at Weber on Tuesday, April 29. In action the same day, Layton hosts Farmington in the first matchup of a three-game series.
