KAYSVILLE — It started as a high, lazy fly ball to left field. And it kept carrying, and carrying, and carrying.
When second baseman Jaxon Marble’s hit finally came down beyond the fence for a solo home run, Davis had a 3-2 lead over Syracuse in a high school boys baseball game Wednesday.
By the time a four-run third inning was over, the Darts’ lead had ballooned to 6-2.
Davis senior reliever Spencer Cannon wriggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning, and the Darts took game two of a three-game Region 1 series against the Titans by a 7-5 margin.
“Honestly, I didn’t think it was going to go out. I was hustling out of the box, but I feel like I got barrel and got my hands through it and it paid off,” Marble said. “I was happy about it.”
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the third, Marble’s dinger was a one-out shot that put the Darts in the lead for good.
“All I wanted to do was find a way on base, help my team. We needed to score runs as fast as we could and that home run got us going,” Marble said.
Five straight Davis (8-4, 2-0 Region 1) batters reached base, and they were juiced when senior third baseman Stryder Prowse came to the plate.
Prowse smashed an opposite-field double to right, clearing the bases.
“Previous at-bat I hit a nice little line drive to the outfield; I was looking to do that again. I was sitting on that outside curveball he (Syracuse pitcher Calder Millard) was throwing, saw it and put it the other way. It went a little further than I thought and I ended up with a double,” Prowse said. “It’s a team game; those guys got on base and I put it in play like I should.”
Syracuse (2-7, 0-2) jumped right back into the fray in the top of the fourth inning when four consecutive players reached against Davis starter Croydon Christensen, and had the bases filled with one run across.
Cannon took over and induced a sacrifice fly by Syracuse shortstop Bronx Manning, which turned into a double play when the runner tagging at second was thrown out at third.
“It’s kind of been my role all year; I’ve gotten used to it. I’ve been middle relief for three years now,” Cannon said. “My mind has been more dialed when I come in, instead of thinking I can’t blow this lead. It’s like whatever happens, happens. It’s worked out a lot better for me.
“I don’t try to do too much, just let them hit the ball,” Cannon said. “I trust my defense to make plays and they’ve been doing a great job of that all year.”
With the gap narrowed to 6-4, the fourth still wasn’t over and it took a splendid play by Marble in the field to get the Darts out of the inning, avoiding further damage.
The play will be recorded in the scorebook as FC 4-6 (fielder’s choice, second to short), as Marble showed his stuff when he handled a tough hopper and got the force play to Cayman Sanchez to end the inning.
“Making plays. Getting outs for my pitcher; they’re doing their job getting ground balls. That’s all we can ask for. I did my best to get the outs,” Marble said.
Cannon said he is usually a one-inning-and-done pitcher but he went three innings on Wednesday, striking out two and didn’t allow a hit.
“My pitch count was low and we’re short on arms right now. I was feeling good,” Cannon added.
Showing versatility demonstrated throughout his Davis career, Marble, a senior, finished the game on the mound, allowing one run in the seventh inning before benefiting from a dandy diving catch by right fielder Carter Garrett to end it.
“The goal is to get outs; throw strikes and let my defense work,” Marble said. “It paid off. We came through with the win.”
Brody McGuire had two hits for Davis, including a hustle double — impressive for a catcher.
For the Titans, sophomore left fielder Burkon Beus couldn’t do anything about the Marble home run but contributed at bat himself with two hits and two runs scored.
