Davis junior Ava Dunyon returns the ball during a match vs. Farmington's Hazel Borland during the Region 1 girls tennis tournament Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, at Mount Ogden Park in Ogden.

OGDEN — The title of Region 1 girls tennis team co-champion came down to one final singles match Friday at Mount Ogden Park.

Davis’ Ava Dunyon, entering the tournament 5-5 on the season, found herself pitted against Farmington’s Hazel Borland in the final singles faceoff of the afternoon.

Dropping two matches to Borland during the regular season, Dunyon wasn’t about to let a third battle — and region respectability — fall through. Dropping the first set, Dunyon emerged late over Borland in the third set (6-7, 6-4, 7-5).

The individual finish cemented a tie for first place between Davis and Weber, crowning both programs as Region 1 champs heading into the postseason.

“This feels like the world,” Dunyon said. “It’s been years, so all of us going to state is awesome because we were definitely the underdogs coming into today.”

Asked about her match, Dunyon said her previous experiences with Borland uncovered some of her opponents’ pitfalls.

“(Borland)’s really good at placing, she’s a lefty,” Dunyon said. “If I can just keep it away from her forehand then it hits her backhand and she can’t move.”

Alongside Dunyon, Davis’ Elizabeth Bentley rolled to a two-set victory over Weber’s Charly Arrow (6-4, 6-2) in third singles and Darts duo Khloe Cisney and Jallista Wright defeated Farmington’s Jane Gate and Macie Peterson (6-3, 6-6, 7-2) in the second group of doubles.

Were Borland to win the day’s final match, Weber would’ve been named the sole region champ after a successful tournament run.

Gracie Toole and Mollie Gibby, both juniors, protected their now 12-0 record on the doubles court with the Warriors’ lone first-place finish on the day. The pair stormed to a two-set victory over Davis’ Lucy Francis and Olivia Roberts (6-2, 6-3) in first doubles.

“This is our first year playing together,” Gibby said. “(Toole) is super fun because she’s kind of feisty (and) we’re both really competitive, which makes it really fun.”

With a daunting postseason on deck, Toole feels good about where their game stands among the stiff competition. Friday’s showing was another chance to prove it, the Weber junior said.

“As we go into (state), those new players know that we are capable of beating them,” Toole said. “We have the same skill set as them and that if we just play like us, then we can win.”

The 6A state tournament is slated for Oct. 10-12 at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. The play-in round is Oct. 5 at Brighton High School.
