Girls soccer: Box Elder blanks Roy to snap losing streak

By RYAN COMER - Standard-Examiner | Sep 17, 2024

ROY — It may not have been a work of art but, for the Box Elder High girls soccer team, it was something that has been elusive the last few weeks — a win

Junior Halli Wright scored twice and Box Elder blanked Roy 2-0 on Tuesday.

“It’s good to get a win, but we didn’t really connect on a whole lot of passes today,” said Box Elder coach BJ Barber. “It wasn’t great soccer, but it’s been a bit since we’ve had a win, so it was good to get the win today.”

One thing Barber had to like was the way his team scored. Wright scored both of her goals on breakaways, the first assisted by freshman Millie Barber and the second assisted by junior Ariana Poll.

“We’ve had a hard time finishing, so getting a couple just put in the corner of the net today was nice to see,” he said.

The win snapped a losing streak that had reached five games for the Bees, who hadn’t won since Aug. 22. They were outscored 19-4 during the skid.

“We’ve struggled defensively before this game,” Barber said, noting that this was the team’s first shutout of the season.

According to Wright, having junior center midfielder Desarae Elegante back made a difference. Elegante was playing in her first game since breaking her left wrist in a game at Bear River on Aug. 9, the second game of the season.

“She is very good in the middle and so to have someone control the middle was really nice and helpful,” Wright said.

Elegante, who scored three goals in Box Elder’s first two games, said it felt good to be back on the field.

“Definitely a little rusty, but it’ll come,” she said.

Box Elder (5-7, 3-6 Region 5) got on the board in the 17th minute and added to its lead in the 54th minute.

Roy (0-11, 0-8) didn’t have many chances throughout most of the contest but did manage to apply pressure late. The Royals had an opportunity in the 57th minute but a shot attempt went across the goal mouth and wide right.

Roy also had successive corner kick chances in the 18th and 17th minutes but couldn’t get one past Box Elder junior goalkeeper Emma Nelson.

Despite a difficult game, which extended Roy’s scoreless streak to five games, coach Bailey Pollock sees improvement and praised her team’s effort.

“I think we’re building every single game that we play and the girls are working on things every single game,” she said. “From the beginning of the season, there’s been lots of improvement and things are getting better, and every game that they come to play, they lay it on the line and they play with heart.

“We play in a really, really tough, competitive region, and it’s probably one of the most competitive regions in the state, in my opinion.”
