Prep football roundup: Layton rallies in 4th quarter for victory; Weber, Davis also win

LAYTON — Michael Marriott rushed for three touchdowns and Layton High football scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat West Jordan 24-17 on Friday night.

Preston DeWitt’s 35-yard field goal got Layton (4-1) on the board at the 9:10 mark of the third quarter, cutting the West Jordan lead to 10-3. Marriott found the end zone on a 6-yard run early in the final frame, and the Lancers trailed 17-0.

Marriott cut the West Jordan lead to 17-16 with 6:21 left in the game when he scampered into the end zone from 4 yards out, then the Lancers converted a two-point pass to take the lead for good. Marriott added an insurance score on a 15-yard run with 1:51 left in the game.

Madden Sargent completed 18 of 33 passes for 226 yards and two interceptions. Marriott rushed 14 times for 58 yards and caught one pass for 17 yards. Malu Lumpkins caught five passes for 41 yards while Teiyon Halbasch had four receptions for 43 yards.

WEBER 28, GRANGER 19

WEST VALLEY CITY — Dyson Parker rushed for 125 yards and scored four touchdowns as Weber won at Granger.

Parker added three receptions for 38 yards and a 61-yard punt return for Weber (4-1).

Dave Wolfinger completed 8 of 13 passes for 131 yards. Ian Elmore had five catches for 77 yards.

DAVIS 44, TAYLORSVILLE 7

KAYSVILLE — Tradon Bessinger completed 6 of 10 passes for 154 yards, six touchdowns and one interception — all in the first half — as Davis blasted Taylorsville.

Bode Sparrow hauled in three of those scoring strikes for Davis (4-1): a 48-yarder to open the scoring, a 16-yarder and an 18-yarder. Easton Frasure took a Bessinger pass 38 yards to paydirt. Jaxton Itaaheau added a 25-yard touchdown and Tyson Baggett had a 10-yard touchdown.

Jace Taula blocked a Taylorsville punt for a safety with 9:43 left in the third quarter to cap the Dart scoring.

Owen Talbot ran for 64 yards on six rushes. Sparrow caught three passes for 81 yards.

MORGAN 65, KEARNS 0

MORGAN — Morgan started and ended the game with a safety in a big shutout win over Kearns.

Miles Sydenham tackled the Kearns ball carrier in the endzone with 10:55 left in the first quarter to open the scoring for Morgan (5-0). Jack Despain returned the ensuing free kick 80 yards for a touchdown and the Trojans led 8-0.

Drew Korth scored on a 10-yard run, then Beck Sheffield found paydirt on a 14-yard quarterback keeper. Sheffield found Lincoln Gilson for a 37-yard passing score, then Cade Randall passed to Korth for a 17-yard score, making the score 35-0 early in the second quarter.

Kanyon Lionelli scored on a 10-yard run, Jack Hurd scored on a 2-yard plunge, and Cael Edgington scampered nine yards for a touchdown, and Morgan led 56-0 at the half.

George Thurston scored on a 2-yard run at the 7:40 mark of the fourth quarter, then Lucas Cordeiro tackled the Kearns ball carrier in the endzone with four seconds left for the final margin.

Sheffield completed 11 of 15 passes for 184 yards and two scores. Randall passed 3 of 5 for 37 yards. Korth rushed for 55 yards and a score on five runs, while Edgington had 54 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts. Huird, Gilson and Eli Mortensen each had two receptions and combined for 132 yards.

BEAR RIVER 27, BURLEY-ID 22

BURLEY, Idaho — Bear River found a win in Idaho and ruined Homecoming at Burley High School.

Reggie Hess scored three touchdowns for Bear River (1-4). He opened the scoring on an 11-yard run with 3:28 left in the second quarter. Burley answered with a touchdown but missed the extra point. With four seconds left in the half, Stone Higley converted a 40-yard field goal and the Bears led 10-6 at the break.

Higley added a 25-yard field goal to tie the game 13-13 with 5:06 left in the third quarter. Burley kicked a field goal early in the fourth quarter, then Hess returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for the go-ahead score with 10:17 left in the game.

The Bears forced a turnover on downs and, on the next play, Hess took a handoff up the middle and sprinted 68 yards untouched for a touchdown, putting BR up 27-16.

ST. JOSEPH 77, UTAH MILITARY 18

OGDEN — Declan Yarosik and Jacob Scehnet each scored four touchdowns as St. Joseph downed Utah Military-Hill Field in Utah’s 8-man classification.

Gunner Windsor passed for three touchdowns and ran for one more for St. Joseph (3-1). Yarosik caught two of Windsor’s scoring strikes, from 27 yards and 20 yards. Yarosik added a 15-yard run and a 30-yard interception return.

Scehnet scored on a 37-yard interception return, a 30-yard run, and two 51-yard rushes. Windsor scored on a 10-yard run and tossed a 65-yard touchdown pass to Kelson Huss. Huss added a 7-yard scoring scamper.

Utah Military (0-3), which did not report stats, scored on a punt return, a kickoff return and a 44-yard pass.

BRIGHAM CITY — Box Elder took a marathon region contest from Bonneville Thursday. Set scores were 25-12, 25-27, 23-25, 25-23, 15-12.

Taya Valenzuela led Box Elder (9-7, 1-1 Region 5) with 10 kills, three aces and six blocks. Lucy Braegger added six kills and four blocks while Jocelyn Vranes tallied seven kills.

Bonneville (1-2, 0-2) did not report stats.

OGDEN 3, MORGAN 2

OGDEN — Ogden beat Morgan in five sets Thursday to open region play. Scores were 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 5-25, 15-13.

Taylor Duke had 14 kills and 25 digs for Ogden (5-6, 1-0 Region 13). Tess Correa added 13 kills and served three aces. Halle Brown tallied 27 digs.

Morgan (8-3, 0-1) did not report stats.
