Girls volleyball: With region wrapped, Syracuse fine-tuning play and resume in sweep of Weber

By BOB JUDSON - Special to the Standard-Examiner | Oct 24, 2024

SYRACUSE — Once Syracuse High girls volleyball wrapped up the Region 1 championship earlier this week, it didn’t take the Titans long to refocus their efforts and set other goals for the season.

First, they wanted to continue an undefeated streak in league play.

Second, that opportunity would come against Weber on Thursday, the only team to take the Titans to five sets this year.

Third, and the ultimate goal, Syracuse wanted to polish its RPI position to get the best possible seed in pursuit of the top prize for the upcoming 6A state playoffs.

One and two happened simultaneously when the Titans remained perfect with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-14) victory over the Warriors with one match left on the schedule.

“We really didn’t talk about it with the girls that we had won region (on Tuesday); I think they probably knew,” first-year Syracuse coach Megan Allred said. “We wanted to make sure we stayed focused and humble, not overlook our competition, because Weber is a really good team. So we had to play well tonight.

“Every team wants to be the region champions; that kind of shows to the locals who stands where. We want to be region champions but this is also a good way to prepare for state and now we’re gearing up for that,” Allred said.

Volleyball brackets will be released Thursday, Oct. 31, after Syracuse wraps up Region 1 action against Fremont next week.

“We’re definitely looking at that. We’ve played some good tournaments, so hopefully they will rank us accordingly,” Allred said. “I think going undefeated is something that is very admirable. That’s always the goal. They will remember that the rest of their lives.”

Syracuse (20-7, 9-0 Region 1) built a 17-9 lead in all three sets and closed each of them out, sweeping the season series.

The Titans trailed 4-1 early in the first set but rallied on a five-point service by Miyah Lish and six straight points by senior Anabell Briggs to take control.

“Today we started a little bit slow at first but once we got back to how we normally play, it was just like all of our other games,” Briggs said. “We served and passed at a high level and got comfortable.”

Briggs had 10 kills, five digs, and hit .450 from the floor.

“I was supported by my team the whole time and was able to do well. That helped me a lot because it’s all mental. We went into this thinking let’s finish out strong because everyone is gunning for us. It’s time to prepare for state,” Briggs said.

Avery Ericksen spiked 10 kills for the Titans and added 13 digs, while Karlie Hamblin checked in with 16 digs.

For Weber (12-15, 3-6), Vivian Cruz had 13 digs and Sophie Sparrow and Hanna Longhurst had six kills each.

After the tight 3-2 win earlier this month on the road at Weber, the Titans are hitting their stride at the right time.

“Today was different. The girls were really focused and excited to play. Some nerves got to them up there; this time they wanted to finish it off,” Allred said. “I’m really proud of these girls. It’s a great group. They work super hard and have shown a lot of discipline.”
