State boys golf: Morgan’s Loughton edges Ben Lomond’s VanBeekum for repeat 3A crown

West Field's Herzog medals inside top 3 in 4A

A local pair highlighted the final round of the 3A boys golf state championship Thursday at Ridge Golf Course in West Valley City, with Morgan’s Lance Loughton birdieing the final hole to surpass Ben Lomond’s Cayson VanBeekum and end his prep career as a repeat titlist.

The Trojans (13-over) finished as the team runner-up with champions Richfield finishing 10-over.

VanBeekum squared his card with the Morgan senior with a birdie on the previous hole, a par-5, hoping to push his final state run a little further. But Loughton added another stroke to his lead with a late birdie putt and a bogey from VanBeekum sealed the deal.

The round capped Loughton at 4-under through 36 holes after he opened the tournament by shooting a field-low 65 on Wednesday. Finishing 3-under, VanBeekum ended his run three strokes better than Loughton in the final round by carding a 68, the best in the field.

Morgan’s Jace Benson (2-under) tied for third individually and Caleb Rees (4-over) tied for seventh.

VanBeekum ended as the only BL golfer cracking the top 10. Junior Zeb Whelton tied for 37th at 23-over while Cade Becraft, Cooper Pitcher, Koban Moyes and Dylan Bodily all played both days of the event.

Ogden had two sophomores make the cut; Logan Handy (27-over, T46) and Parley Gladwell (28-over, T50) finished one stroke apart.

Herzog lands top 3 seat in 4A tourney

Mack Herzog will forever be the first West Field boys golfer to crack the top three at state after the freshman tied for third individually Thursday in the 4A state tournament at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Salt Lake City.

The Longhorns finished ninth overall in their first-ever state tournament across a 16-team field. Park City won the tournament shooting 4-under as a team.

Herzog (3-under) rebounded with three birdies on the back nine, closing the day with one such birdie on a challenging par-5. The finish locked Herzog in a four-way tie with Maddox Nielsen (Orem), Tanner Wade (Desert Hills) and Easton Toone (Murray).

West Field teammate Ethan Luna (5-over) fell just shy of the top 25, tying for 26th individually. Daxton Crase, Roc Hansen, Boston Chambers and Daxton Seager all played both days.
