OGDEN — Two looks at the net during the first 20 minutes and the Tigers were off.

Ogden’s Elle Weston boosted her team past Delta 8-0 in mercy-rule fashion with two early scores in the second round of the 3A girls soccer playoffs Wednesday at Spence Eccles Ogden Community Sports Complex.

Saturday, No. 6 seed Ogden (12-7) travels to No. 3 Canyon View (15-3) for a quarterfinal matchup determining who will receive one of four coveted seats in the semifinal round slated for Oct. 24 at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman.

“Finding feet” is Ogden head coach Alexis King’s continued mantra, even after her Tigers closed the regular season with four consecutive region victories and securing a first-round bye to begin the postseason.

Sophomore Elle Watson found two of those big touches early in Wednesday’s match, propelling Ogden to a 2-0 advantage a little under 20 minutes in.

Ogden welcomed Watson back to the roster later than expected due to a lingering hamstring injury, but the rising striker’s growth from Year 1 to Year 2 has glistened on King’s radar.

“It’s been fun to have her back,” King said. “She played quite a bit last year and she’s become a strong player. In the offseason last year, she grew bigger and stronger and more tactical, and (grew) a lot as a player within the last year.”

The Tigers snuck two more goals, the first by Alina Aparicio and second by Seren Gee, past Delta’s senior goalkeeper Hannah Tasker with under 10 minutes left in the half.

After the hot start, Ogden didn’t shy away in trying to end the match early.

Senior Hannah Lewis kicked off another 4-0 run for the Tigers with less than 30 minutes to go, followed by back-to-back goals by fellow senior Kate Pulley, which set up Ogden goalkeeper Grace Malan for the shutout.

With just under 12 minutes left in regulation, Megan Beus did the honors sinking the solo, quarterfinal-clinching goal to cap what King considered a textbook example of how aggressive the Tigers’ attack has become since starting the season 2-6.

“(We’re) playing for each other, not for ourselves,” King said. “I think sometimes game management, our focus, sometimes can be a little too loose and not as sharp … That’s one of the things we want to make sure we keep a top priority.”

Saturday’s quarterfinal match between Ogden and Canyon View is slated for 1 p.m. Kickoff times are subject to change.
