Girls state tennis: Weber, Davis doubles end season shy of 6A semifinals

Top area finishes from 6A girls tennis state championship

SALT LAKE CITY — Five Region 1 girls tennis players penciled in quarterfinal appearances at the state championships over the weekend at Liberty Park.

Multiple 6A programs left their mark on the tourney, including long strides by Weber and Davis challenging some of the field’s top talent. The 6A bracket is a sharp contrast to 4A action, which featured far fewer Northern Utah stars making the cut and no names clearing the round of 16.

Here are the top 6A storylines from the weekend, including standout performances in both singles and doubles play.

Weber’s Toole, Gibby set high offseason expectations

In just one season together, Weber High juniors Gracie Toole and Mollie Gibby made quite the impression on the doubles court.

Their road ended abruptly, however, with a loss to Pleasant Grove’s Tally Johnston and Ava Stevens (6-0, 6-1) in the quarterfinal round.

Toole and Mollie earned a first-round bye and cleared Westlake’s Lucy Nelson and Stella Nielsen (6-4, 6-4) in the round of 16 to reach the quarterfinals with the state’s best 16 doubles players.

The Weber pair translated their unchallenged 12-0 regular-season record into a Region 1 doubles championship at the tail end of September. Weber head girls tennis coach Kaitlan Toole couldn’t be happier to return the seniors-to-be to next year’s leadership circle.

“They have that chemistry you need in a doubles team,” Kaitlan Toole said. “They’ll be training together in the offseason and have talked about doing tournaments together.”

Toole and Gibby end the season 16-4 overall following their state run, never letting a regular-season match stretch beyond two sets.

Davis duo produces late stand, falls short of semis

Another pair of Region 1 hopefuls, Davis juniors Khole Cisney and Kallista Wright, rallied back from a first-set shutout to squeeze Corner Canyon’s Anna Dorny and Emily Creason (6-0, 7-5) before falling in their fate-sealing second set.

Cisney and Wright entered the tournament worthy of a first-round bye and used three sets to defeat Bingham’s Reagan Littlewood and Trish Wilson (6-4, 6-3, 6-0) to advance to the quarterfinal stage.

Davis did not provide an overall record for Cisney and Wright.

Three locals ascend to singles quarterfinals

It was definitely a tall test for Weber’s Julia Warner as one of just four freshmen vying for stardom in their first-ever state singles round over the weekend.

With a first-round bye, Warner cleared Corner Canyon’s Molly George (6-2, 7-5) before falling to eventual 6A singles champion Bella Lewis (6-0, 6-2) in the quarterfinals.

Weber head girls tennis coach Kaitlan Toole said a promising prospect like Warner is a welcomed addition to a roster that will include several more freshmen with similar expectations in 2025.

“Her maturity as a freshman, she’s going to have a lot of growth,” Toole said. “Each year that she’s plays, she’ll have that experience.”

Warner finished her freshman campaign 17-3 overall.

Two more area names, Davis junior Elizabeth Bentley and Weber junior Charly Arnow, clawed their way into the quarterfinal round of the third singles bracket. Both players fell out of favor in two sets.

Bentley and Arnow each leveraged first-round byes into victories in the round of 16. Bentley defeated Layton’s Payge West (6-1, 6-2) and Arnow topped Lehi’s Liberty Salcido (6-1, 6-4) to join her Region 1 foe in the quarterfinals.

Arnow finished the season 18-2 overall and 10-0 in the regular season. Davis did not provide an overall record for Bentley.

These doubles teams reached the round of 32 but did not advance past the round of 16: Emma Bankhead/Anya Jacobsen (Syracuse); Jane Bessinger/Shaelynn Bates (Layton); Lucy Francis/Olivia Roberts (Davis); Malia Barrows/Mary Holker (Weber); Alison Holt/Emma Jeppesen (Syracuse); Miranda Rasmussen/Holland Stone (Fremont); Peyton Anderson/Cali Springer (Layton).

These singles players reached the round of 32 but did not advance past the round of 16: Quincy McConkie (Fremont); Katetlyn King (Fremont); Annisey Goaslind (Davis); Ava Dunyon (Davis); Sarah Taggart (Syracuse); Chloe Norris (Syracuse); Sadie Smith (Syracuse); Prelsee West (Layton); Millie Hardy (Weber).
