Girls soccer playoffs: Odeh goals give West Field first postseason win

By BOB JUDSON - Special to the Standard-Examiner | Oct 10, 2024

PLAIN CITY — West Field High in Taylor, Utah, is a long way from Rome, Italy.

But the Longhorns brought a touch of the old country to their warmup jerseys that had “veni vidi vici” emblazoned on the shirttails, which is Latin for a swift, conclusive victory.

More exactly: I came, I saw, I conquered.

Sophomore midfielder Phalastine Odeh did just that, scoring two goals 4 minutes and 22 seconds apart, and the No. 15 Longhorns advanced to the second round of the girls soccer 4A state playoffs with a 3-0 victory Thursday over the No. 18 Hurricane Tigers.

“Our captains actually thought of (the slogan). It’s because we’re a new school; no one knows who we are,” Odeh said. “We want to go for it and we want to conquer as a team. We’re going to go out strong.”

West Field spent much of the first half pressing the Tigers in their end of the field but was unable to get one past Hurricane keeper Ella Jocelyn.

“Our coach (Cade Miller) wanted us to control the game; as a team build it up, get as many shots as we could, until we got a moment to score,” Odeh said.

The Longhorns (9-10) finally got on the board in the 34th minute when Odeh converted from the right side through a tight window.

“We have a trick corner play and it just kind of went in,” Odeh said. “I had no angle; some runners going by … I saw a tiny gap, shot it and it went in.”

Then, just before the half, Odeh took aim from 35 yards out and powered it into the back of the net.

“Some of my teammates were making a run to the left side, pulling the defenders out. I saw an opening; there was so much space and I hit a banger,” Odeh said.

A brace in less than five minutes is impressive — and unusual for Odeh, who had only scored two other times all season.

“It has a lot to do with my teammates and my coach building me up, telling me to keep shooting,” Odeh said. “I’ve had a lot of opportunities, not a lot of goals. I told them I was saving it for the playoffs.”

As the second half wound down, West Field was focused on maintaining its lead and keeping the Tigers (6-11) caged up.

“We didn’t want any goals scored on us; kind of kept the ball. If we had a chance, take it, but don’t let them score,” Odeh said.

Freshman Kate Marriott put an exclamation point on the win with West Field’s final goal in the 76th minute.

Senior keeper Avery Charlesworth watched most of the game some 30 yards in front of her own goal as the Longhorn defense constantly kept the ball at the other end of the pitch.

“That’s our technique; we press high so we can play to me and distribute to the back,” Charlesworth said. “It’s been pretty successful throughout the year. I’m excited to see what the state tournament holds for us.”

Charlesworth is one of the few seniors on West Field’s squad and had kind of a homecoming because she played at Fremont last year. Thursday’s game was staged in Plain City because of ongoing construction at the new school in Taylor.

“It’s been really cool to experience everything for the first time. We’re the first sport to go into a state playoff game. It’s kind of motivating to be the first to do everything,” Charlesworth said.

As a low seed, the Longhorns will spend the rest of their tournament run on the road. That begins Tuesday, Oct. 15, traveling south to face No. 2 Snow Canyon (14-2).

It won’t dampen their spirits.

“First state playoff game; it was awesome. We were so pumped about it,” Odeh said. “New school. New team. It was great to be home so all our family was able to come and support us.”
