LAYTON — Lone runners and teams alike took to Layton Commons Park on Wednesday afternoon for the Region 1 and Region 5 championships in the hope of bolstering their resumes with one last race before upcoming state championships.

Davis’ boys and girls teams headlined the day, each bringing home the team crown in their respective Region 1 races.

In Region 5, Bonneville sophomore Avery Barton continued an impressive Year 2 with yet another decisive victory in a girls race.

The day’s action started with a young, Region 5 star Barton winning the girls 3-mile race with a final time of 18:04.50. Barton, who won City-County outright earlier this season, passed runner-up Katie Hansen of Woods Cross by nearly 15 seconds.

The girls top 10 list included several area names, including three members of first-place Box Elder. Maya Lee (6th, 19:03.43), Elizabeth Rupper (8th, 19:14.20), and Macie Lee (10th, 19:21.89) each gave the Bees a bump in the team ranks.

Northridge freshman Evelyn Cook (4th, 18:41.76) and Bonneville senior Nicole Wayment (5th, 18:45.22) each had standout performances for their respective squads.

On the boys side of Region 5, Northridge and Box Elder were the only area schools to break into the top 10. Aaron Eskelson (5th, 15:49.75), Jeff Hazard (6th, 15:50.80), and Nate Eskelson (10th, 15:56.68) landed three spots for the Knights; Bees senior James Larson was the only other area name joining the upper picture.

Following a two-hour hiatus, Region 1 girls took the course by storm with Davis and Weber splattering the top 10 with several runners. Davis sophomore Isabella Cram (18:26.42) finished second overall behind individual champion Ellie Dorius of Farmington.

Three more Darts — Erin Christensen (6th, 19:01.63), Eliza Swain (8th, 19:08.12), and Helen Glaze (10th, 19:09.73) — joined Cram with top 10 finishes. Weber’s Catherine Wald (5th, 18:58.21) and Kate Lang (7th, 19:07.91) tested first-place Davis but the Warriors slid into second place overall.

Farmington’s Landon Sturgeon won the Region 1 boys 3-mile by about five seconds, beating Davis senior Jonny Reed (2nd, 15:13.36) and Layton senior Jonathan Thornley (3rd, 15:15.06) for the gold. Davis topped Farmington overall, with Carter Rawlings (6th, 15:25.79) and Harrison Skousen (9th, 15:33.28) joining Reed inside the top 10.

Runners now prepare for the 6A and 5A state championships slated for Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City.
