Prep roundup: Morgan football trounces Grantsville in 3A showdown
MORGAN — Grantsville (6-2, 2-1 Region 13) took a 3-0 lead on a 35-yard field goal early in the first quarter.
But Morgan scored 42 unanswered points for a lopsided, 42-3 region win Friday night that gave 3A’s No. 2 RPI team a convincing win over the No. 1 RPI team.
Beck Sheffield tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Boston Zack to give Morgan (8-0, 3-0 Region 13) the lead for good with 9:24 left in the first quarter. Lincoln Gilson scored the next three touchdowns on runs of 12, 5 and 4 yards, and the Trojans led 28-3 at the half.
Jake Hansen and birthday boy Luke Bauerle each had two interceptions, with Hansen returning his second pick 82 yards for a touchdown. Krew Galbraith capped the scoring on a 1-yard plunge with 4:42 left in the game.
Morgan outgained Grantsville 468-105. Sheffield passed 18 of 29 for 129 yards. Gilson rushed 18 times for 119 yards and three TDs, and caught seven passes for 95 yards. Drew Korth added 96 yards on 15 carries, and Zack caught four passes for 70 yards.
BEAR RIVER 44, WEST FIELD 6
TAYLOR — Jaxson Theurer passed for four touchdowns to lead Bear River to its first region win at West Field.
Theurer connected with Kash Avery for a 7-yard touchdown to open the scoring for Bear River (2-6, 1-3 Region 11). Theurer tossed two scoring strikes to Eli Braegger — an 18-yarder to make the score 14-0 in the first quarter, and a 17-yarder with 3:06 left in the third quarter.
Theurer connected with Tatum Stephens on the first play of the fourth quarter, and Stephens sprinted down the sideline then cut to behind a defender for a 70-yard touchdown to make the score 44-0.
Glaiden Behrens took an interception 81 yards for a pick-six and Tydon Jones scored on a 1-yard dive to account for the other Bears points.
Tyce Abbott scored on a 2-yard quarterback keeper for West Field (1-7, 1-3) to break up the shutout with 44 seconds left in the game.
BOUNTIFUL 50, BOX ELDER 21
BOUNTIFUL — Kadyn Reyes got Box Elder on the board with a 58-yard touchdown pass to Carter Buchanan that cut the Bountiful (7-1, 4-1 Region 5) lead to 14-7 with 3:53 left in the second quarter, only to see the Redhawks respond with four straight touchdowns.
Jay Macias scored the other two Box Elder (3-5, 1-4) touchdowns: a 68-yard run early in the third quarter and a 5-yard scamper late in the third.
Bountiful’s win sets up a Region 5 showdown at Roy (8-0, 5-0) on Thursday, Oct. 10.
WOODS CROSS 12, NORTHRIDGE 10
LAYTON — Woods Cross (5-3, 3-2 Region 5) ran for 344 yards and held off Northridge in a low-scoring battle.
Tre Nye threw 18 of 22 for 275 yards and the lone touchdown for Northridge (5-3, 2-3), a 7-yarder to Braxton Featherstone. Dontae Dyson caught four passes for 74 yards Rylen Rude had five catches for 55 yards. Tayven Norvang had 15 tackles.

OGDEN — Ogden dropped a five-set thriller at home to Grantsville (12-7, 3-4 Region 13) Thursday. Scores were 22-25, 25-16, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13.
Lauretta Taukiuvea led Ogden (6-11, 2-5) with 18 kills and five blocks. Tess Correa had 12 kills. Rian Barnes tallied 27 digs and Taylor Duke added 25 digs.
MAPLE MTN TOURNAMENT
SPANISH FORK — Fremont (9-4) won both its games on the first day of the Maple Mountain High School tournament.
The Silverwolves beat Provo in four sets (27-29, 25-18, 25-10, 25-12). Fremont then swept Alta by scores of 25-17, 25-14, 25-18.
