Local college commits: Bear River’s Holden Potter signs with Fort Hays State baseball
Weber State picks up area soccer trio
GARLAND — Bear River senior Holden Potter officially signed with Fort Hays State baseball on Wednesday surrounded by family and friends during a ceremony at BRHS.
Potter, recording a 1.52 ERA and a perfect 9-0 record on the mound during the Bears’ latest All-Area Team of the Year campaign, said his October visit to the Hays, Kansas, campus won his commitment.
Discussing his trip, Potter pointed to Tigers head baseball coach Justin Wichert’s knowledge of the pitching staff as the difference-maker during his recruitment. The Garland native held offers from Colorado Mesa and Adams State.
“My final decision there was the coaches were amazing,” Potter said. “(Wichert) was telling me about the stuff he’d done with their pitchers and I just absolutely loved it over everything else.”
Outside of Bear River, Potter has played baseball across the country in preparation for a collegiate career. The senior also mentioned the significance of what playing baseball after school means for his two older brothers, who’ve supported him through the process.
“I’ve always wanted to play past high school,” Potter said. “I’ve been working towards this for a while now.”
