Prep basketball roundup: Donovan nets 50 points for St. Joseph; Fremont girls win opener

OGDEN — Gavin Donovan poured in 50 points to lead St. Joseph boys basketball to a 92-55 home win over Utah Military Academy-Hill Field on Tuesday night.

Gavin Wolf added 22 points for St. Joseph (1-0). Gunner Windsor scored 11 points. Declan Yarosic led the team with 10 steals.

Utah Military (0-1) did not report stats.

MAPLE MTN 65, ROY 63

ROY — Roy scored 24 points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t rally all the way back in a home loss to open the season.

Boston Greenhalgh knocked down three of his team’s four 3-pointers and led Roy (0-1) with 18 points, adding four rebounds. Brynce Goodwin scored 12 points and Tyrece Holbrook added 12 points with two steals.

PAYSON 69, BOX ELDER 42

PAYSON — Payson outscored Box Elder 26-6 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Bees at home.

McKay Deem led Box Elder (0-1) with 12 points and two 3-pointers. Carter Buchanan tallied 10 points and Ryan Jenson scored eight.

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 68, JUDGE MEM 44

LAYTON — Layton Christian Academy cruised to a home win over Judge Memorial.

UNLV signee Tyrin Jones led LCA (1-0) with 13 points. Eastern Washington signee Alan Gballou and guard Samuel Obenjo each scored 10 points. Albert Ntungicimpaye netted seven points and Weber State signee point guard Melchi Egbeyemi added six points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

FREMONT 51, AMERICAN FORK 34

PLAIN CITY — Abby Christensen scored a game-high 15 points, with nine points in the fourth quarter, to lead Fremont past American Fork to open the season.

Ava Post added 10 points with two 3-pointers for Fremont (1-0). Mia Smith scored seven points.

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 54, BEAR RIVER 32

GARLAND — Layton Christian outscored Bear River 16-2 in the third quarter to take control in a season-opening win.

Ava Smith scored a game-high 16 points for Layton Christian (1-0). Fabiana Lopez tallied 12 points. Arina Charkina and Penelope Arroyo each added seven points.

Aubree Fry led Bear River (0-1) with nine points and Brooklyn Capener added eight.
