CEDAR CITY — No. 1 Morgan High football held No. 2 Richfield’s vaunted rushing offense, averaging 237.3 yards and 34.8 points per game, to zero points and 144 yards on the ground to win the 3A state championship, defeating the Wildcats 13-2 in a game played Saturday night at Southern Utah University.

The victory makes Morgan (13-0) the only undefeated football team in Utah. It also gives the Trojans the state’s longest winning streak at 13 games, and snaps the previous longest winning streak held by Richfield (12-1) at 25 games.

Morgan moved the ball to the Richfield 11 on its first possession but Richfield’s Griffin Waymen intercepted Morgan quarterback Beck Sheffield at the goal line and returned the pick 20 yards.

The Wildcats moved the ball to the Morgan 6-yard line where the Trojans stuffed Waymen, also Richfield’s quarterback, on a fourth-and-1 keeper to force a turnover on downs.

Three plays later, at the 2:10 mark in the first quarter, Richfield opened the scoring with a safety when Sheffield threw away a pass in the end zone under pressure from the Wildcat defense and was flagged for intentional grounding.

Jack Despain kept Richfield from multiplying the safety, picking off Waymen and returning it to the Morgan 44 on the ensuing possession.

Six plays later, the Trojans got on the scoreboard when Sheffield tossed a pass to a wide-open Lincoln Gilson, who backed into the endzone for a 27-yard score. Carter Gorham’s PAT gave Morgan a 7-2 lead. That was all the points the Trojans would need on the night.

Despite Morgan muffing a punt catch, the Trojans forced three Richfield punts and the Wildcats forced Morgan into a turnover on downs.

Richfield drew a facemask penalty on its third punt and subsequent Morgan return, giving the Trojans the ball at their own 49. Despite a long touchdown pass being called back for an illegal man downfield, Morgan drove to the Richfield 3.

That’s when Sheffield kept the ball on a read option flow to the right and trotted untouched going left into the end zone for a 13-2 lead with 2:26 left in the first half. Gorham’s kick doinked off the far upright, which on a college field is 5 yards narrower than on a regulation high school field.

Richfield’s next four possessions brought a punt and Morgan’s defense forcing three turnovers on downs. The Trojans took the final turnover on downs at their own 27 with 7:05 left in the game, marched to the Richfield 23 and ran out the clock to claim the state trophy.

Morgan outgained Richfield on the ground 157-144. Sheffield completed 6 of 13 passes for 119 yards, one score and one interception. Korth rushed for 76 yards and Sheffield added 63. Gilson had three catches for 83 yards.

Noah Birkeland led Morgan’s defense with 14 tackles and two tackles for loss. The Trojans held Richfield to 80 passing yards and a 5-of-20 mark on third and fourth downs.

The win gives Morgan its second undefeated season in the last three years, and third title in seven seasons. With the victory, Trojans’ coach Jared Barlow improved his postseason record to 11-2.
