Prep roundup: Weber football wins on road; Morgan volleyball in 3A semifinals
SOUTH JORDAN — No. 9 Weber High football trailed 14-3 early in the second quarter, then scored the game’s final 24 points for a 27-14 victory in the 6A second round Friday at No. 8 Bingham.
Alex Johnson kicked two field goals for Weber (7-4). He converted a 21-yarder to make the score 7-3 with 9:30 left in the second quarter, then capped the scoring on a 38-yard boot with 5:56 left in the game.
Ian Elmore returned a kickoff 96 yards for a Weber touchdown late in the second quarter to make the score 14-10 for Bingham (5-6) at the half.
Dyson Parker gave Weber the lead on a 1-yard dive with 4:45 left in the third quarter. With 9:56 left in the game, Crew Cacciacarne connected with Brock Dean for a 12-yard scoring strike to extend the lead to 24-14.
Weber advances to play at No. 1 Corner Canyon in the quarterfinals. Corner Canyon beat No. 16 Westlake 56-0 to advance.
MORGAN 43, CANYON VIEW 10
MORGAN — Lincoln Gilson had 100-plus yards rushing and receiving, Gilson and Drew Korth each scored three touchdowns and No. 1 Morgan beat up No. 8 Canyon View (6-6) in the 3A second round for its 10th straight trip to the state semifinals.
Gilson took a Beck Sheffield pass 5 yards to open the scoring for Morgan (11-0) for an 8-0 lead. Sheffield connected with Korth for a 22-yard scoring strike midway through the second quarter, and Morgan led 15-3 at the half.
In a 28-point third quarter, Korth scored on a 15-yard run, Gillson added touchdown runs of 23 and 42 yards, and Korth capped the scoring on a 9-yard run.
Gilson had eight carries for 115 yards and eight receptions for 102 yards. Korth had 84 yards on 10 rushes. Sheffield passed 12 of 22 for 158 yards. The Trojans tallied 427 yards of total offense and held Canyon View to 202.
This game was Morgan’s 30th consecutive playoff appearance and 10th straight win in playoff openers.
The Trojans next face No. 4 Manti (8-3) at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman. Manti shut out No. 5 Juab 28-0 to advance.
GRANTSVILLE 30, OGDEN 0
GRANTSVILLE — No. 6 Ogden saw its seven-win season end in a shutout loss at No. 3 Grantsville (9-2) in the 3A second round.
Jack Thompson hauled in eight catches for 144 yards for Ogden (7-4) and Harrison Hoskins grabbed a defensive interception.
LEHI 47, LAYTON 6
LEHI — Michael Marriott tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Vann Sandoval late in the third quarter for No. 13 Layton’s only points in a 6A second-round loss at No. 4 Lehi (8-2).
Marriott (78 yards) and Madden Sargent (118 yards) each threw 5 of 13 at quarterback. Sandoval caught four passes for 62 yards.
Layton ends the year with a 4-7 record.
MAPLE MTN 24, NORTHRIDGE 21
SPANISH FORK — No. 10 Northridge gave up the game-winning touchdown with 1:37 left in the game in a tough loss at No. 7 Maple Mountain in the 5A second round.
Northridge opened the scoring on an Andrew Ortiz 22-yard touchdown run with 6:14 left in the first quarter. After a Maple Mountain (8-2) score, the Knights took a 14-7 lead on a 19-yard scamper by Tre Nye. A touchdown and field goal gave Maple Mountain a 17-14 halftime lead.
With 4:35 left in the game, Nye tossed a screen pass to Jaxon Fresques, who turned it into a 56-yard score for a 21-17 lead.
The Knights end the year with a 7-5 record.
MONTICELLO 63, UTAH MILITARY 8
MONTICELLO — Papataia Owda scored No. 7 Utah Military’s only points on a 70-yard run with 11:20 left in the first quarter but the Thunderbirds fell at No. 2 Monticello (7-3) in the 8-man quarterfinals.
Utah Military ends its inaugural campaign with a 2-6 record.

OREM — No. 4 Morgan (17-12) won its second-round and quarterfinal matches Friday. The Trojans advance to face No. 1 Canyon View (28-2) at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals at Utah Valley University. The championship match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
No. 11 Ogden split its matches. The Tigers face No. 7 Summit Academy (20-8) in the one-loss bracket at 8 a.m. Saturday.
