‘We needed this win’: West Field girls topple Ogden 49-40 on road before holiday break
Doxey drops 16 points on Tigers, pushes West Field to third win
OGDEN — On a night when the basketball seemingly sputtered in all directions, West Field’s girls converted in transition often enough to give Ogden a run on the road. Breaking a two-game losing streak, the Longhorns held on for a 49-40 win Thursday night.
Senior Ella Doxey’s 16-point performance led West Field (3-6) in what she admitted wasn’t the prettiest finish but the one her group needed following a 56-43 loss to APA Draper.
From the jump, the Longhorns made Ogden (5-6) work for every loose ball and made life difficult for the Tigers’ bigs when those free possessions went the other way. West Field’s defense capped Ogden’s go-to forward Salote Tonga to 12 points.
Doxey knows turnovers are like gold.
“That’s one thing we’ve talked about so much in practice,” Doxey said. “We’ve worked on that a lot. … Offensively, we need to work harder, on the guards’ part, so we can put the ball where something can happen at the hoop.”
Ogden junior Capri Colvin (two points) delivered the first points of the night, getting a dish from Lauretta Taukiuvea for a long two-pointer mere seconds after the tipoff. It’d become the Tigers’ only successful look from the field over the next eight minutes.
The Longhorns, despite coughing away multiple free possessions, waltzed into the second quarter leading 11-3 with junior Rylee Andreasen’s two 3s leading the scoring.
Two 3-point buckets by sophomore Lily Gonzalez (eight points) senior Macy Vine (seven points) led Ogden back into the conversation; Tonga added three points in the paint, including a game-tying layup, making it 16-all, with three minutes left in the half.
West Field, finishing the night with 22 total turnovers, hardly limited their own giveaways during the first half. The Longhorns did finish 9 of 13 at the free-throw line.
“That’s not acceptable,” West Field coach Rich Stoeckl said. “When we get a steal, we’re not doing a good job of finishing, but I’m proud of them. We needed this win.”
Jumping ahead by four at the break, West Field returned to the court with authority. Nine quick points between Doxey and Andreasen forced an Ogden timeout with the Longhorns’ lead rising to as much as 13 with five minutes still to play in the third quarter.
Tonga broke out for seven third-quarter points, towing Ogden within six after drawing the whistle on junior Tailey Buckway with 1:18 left. Senior Canyon Britt tacked a free throw onto West Field’s now seven-point advantage as the third quarter closed.
Ogden junior Jill Wood pointed to Tonga as a key influence night in and night out.
“(Tonga) brings so much joy to the court,” Wood said. “She celebrates everyone. She has handles like no one else.”
It became clear more names than Tonga needed to step up as Ogden, turning the ball over twice to begin the fourth quarter, quickly found itself down 11 with 4:25 left to play.
Adding to her pile of steals, Megan Beus spied a loose ball and found teammate Tonga on the run to set up a big 3-point bucket pulling the Tigers back within nine with three minutes remaining.
West Field sophomore Megan Petersen restored a 10-point lead late and Doxey added two free throws to push the Tigers too far behind with under a minute to go.
In the end, Wood felt her team almost tried to do too much with the numerous free possessions they encountered.
“I think a lot of the time we tried to hustle too much,” Wood said. “We should’ve slowed down. … That’s an area we can improve on.”
West Field hosts Northridge on Saturday (5:30 p.m.) and Ogden next travels to Logan on Tuesday, Dec. 31 (2 p.m.).
