Ogden head girls soccer coach Alexis King speaks with her team during an afternoon practice on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2024, at Spencer Eccles Ogden Community Sports Complex in Ogden.

OGDEN – Alexis King’s first head coaching job arrived faster than she might’ve guessed. Still, when Ryan Robinson suddenly stepped away from the Ogden girls soccer program, King jumped on and won the opportunity with little hesitation.

The former assistant is currently 0-2 in her first season as Ogden’s head coach as the Tigers search for the win column Friday against Clearfield (5:30 p.m., Spence Eccles Community Sports Complex). Last year, Ogden finished 18-2 during King’s first year on staff.

“I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity because I really like this group of girls,” King told the Standard-Examiner. “I’ve always wanted to be a coach. I’ve had a few coaching opportunities before but this was the first real high school one.”

Ogden went toe-to-toe with Brighton on Wednesday in a 1-1 draw to force a penalty-kick shootout (4-3 loss). Senior goalkeeper Grace Malan said the Tigers are still in the infant stages of building their chemistry.

Malan might have the best view of the game from the net, but she’s also served as a witness to plenty of talented names that came through Ogden during the past three winning seasons. One of the Tigers’ six active seniors, Malan feels King has the potential to carry on that tradition after the unexpected change.

“I think we’re getting more connected the more we play,” Malan said. “At first it was kind of hard, but I feel we’re getting used to how each other plays. … We’ve been a very successful program for the past few years, but I think (King) is a good addition at head coach and I think she’ll bring an aspect that hasn’t been here before.”

As a former player at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, King is working on translating her college career to her new role as a coach. King pointed to her administrative and organizational duties as the “little things” she feels will make the biggest difference for her as a coach.

It was in Ogden’s second loss of the regular season that King began seeing her voice as a coach — in and out of practice — received on the field.

“For me, I’ve always been a player and haven’t been in a position where I’ve had to be a head coach and help our team grow off of our challenges,” King said. “After our first game I was like ‘What do I do?’ and a lot of thought went into our practice on Tuesday. It was really nice to see the girls applying what we went over into the (Brighton) game and I think we saw a lot more success.”
