HERRIMAN — For 79 minutes and 10 seconds of game time, the No. 6 Layton High girls soccer team held 6A’s top-scoring offense scoreless.

Prep soccer is still an 80-minute game. Ivy Harding headed one in from close range for No. 2 Lone Peak, which handed the Lancers (11-7) a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in Tuesday’s 6A state semifinal.

The Knights had a corner kick as the clock hit 1:00. Bella Devey hit the corner, Ruby Lee headed the ball to around the penalty spot where Harding redirected the ball through for the game-winning goal.

Simultaneous celebration and dejection played out on the turf, as the Knights dogpiled and the Lancers had their hands on their heads.

“It is heartbreaking, but you know, they gave their whole heart out there, right? So they have no reason to be down,” Layton coach Tara Ferrin said. “I mean, yes, someone had to lose, but they left it out on the field and you can be happy about that.”

Layton got to Tuesday’s semifinal by beating region foe Syracuse in the second round before upsetting No. 3 Copper Hills in last week’s quarterfinal.

The reward was to face Lone Peak, which had beaten Layton in seven of the previous eight meetings and also had a 6A-high 84 goals to its name.

“Our check was just to keep our mark and as they’re running through, pick them up and that’s what the defense did. We just didn’t clear the ball out on the corner kick, it came back in the middle and they found it,” Ferrin said.

Both teams had scoring chances in the 79 minutes of game time before the goal, but none went in.

LP’s Kate Fuller dragged a one-on-one shot wide in 20th minute. Layton’s Calli Holje hit a well-struck free kick that LP keeper Eliza Collings had to tip over the bar in the 24th minute.

A Fuller long-range shot in the 60th minute hit the crossbar and bounced straight up, eventually into Layton keeper Savannah Putman’s hands. Putman watched a well-worked LP chance glance off the post in the 75th minute.

Putman and two defenders could only watch as Harding’s last-minute header went past them, though.

Ferrin, who will start her first season coaching Farmington High’s girls basketball team next month, praised the team for improving every game this season despite a midseason formation change from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2.
