Utah prep football playoffs: Ben Lomond to host 1st home playoff game since 1983, Davis-Weber rematch set
Utah’s high school football playoff brackets were unveiled Saturday morning and, though all the games are intriguing because it’s now the postseason, a few stand out.
Ben Lomond High School will host a home playoff game for the first time since 1983. The Scots (6-4) are the No. 6 seed in the 3A state tournament and will host fellow 3A North team No. 11 Union in the first round on Oct. 20.
Even in the Scots’ runs to the state title games in 1984 and 1997, they made those runs all on the road. They’re coming off a first win in the Iron Horse since 2016, and have their first winning season since 2000. Now, they’ll look for the first main-draw playoff win since 2000 in their first home playoff game in 40 years.
Ogden will host Juan Diego in the 3A playoffs in the 8-9 matchup. The Soaring Eagle won the regular-season meeting 31-28 in double-overtime on Sept. 29.
No. 6 Davis (9-1) and No. 11 Weber (6-4), the two hottest teams in Region 1, will contest a rematch at Davis in the second round.
Both teams received a first-round bye; the 6A tournament has 18 teams and will have two first-round games to get the bracket down to 16.
The Darts won the outright Region 1 title, their first since 2016, and beat the Warriors 45-26 in Kaysville on Sept. 15, though both teams have undergone some changes since then.
Also on the bracket is an outside chance at a Roy-Bonneville rematch in the second round of the 5A playoffs. Roy was rewarded for winning Region 5 and going 8-2 in the regular season with the No. 3 seed.
No. 14 Bonneville will host No. 19 Hunter and should the Lakers win, they’d get another crack at the Royals, who won the regular-season meeting 27-12.
Also in 5A, Clearfield didn’t qualify for the playoffs after posting an 0-10 record.
Full brackets can be viewed online at uhsaa.org/tournaments. All first-round, second-round and quarterfinal games are tentatively scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m., though schools typically change kick times.
