Layton High sweeps Region 1 track titles, girls 1st region title since 1996; results
KAYSVILLE — Last year, the Layton High boys track team broke a 30-plus year drought to win its first region championship since the 1980s.
Thursday, it was the Layton girls team’s turn. The Lancers swept the team titles at this week’s Region 1 track and field championships, with the girls winning their first region championship since 1996 and the boys going back to back.
LHS senior distance runner Hailey Low accounted for 38 of Layton’s 169 team points, as she won the 1600 meters, the 3200, ran a leg on the first-place 4 x 800 relay team and then took second in the 800.
“I think it’s just been pretty awesome as a team, I’ve been doing it for my team. I wouldn’t usually run the 800, just for fun, but we had a chance to win on the girls and on the boys side,” Low said.
Low led by as much as 90 meters on the final lap of the 3200 and ended up winning the race by 12 seconds. The 800, which isn’t her specialty, happened at the end of the meet with the wear and tear of the 1600 and 3200 very apparent, but Low finished second and teammate Carli Nelson took third.
“During the race, yeah (my legs) were burning. Definitely more of a leg-burner than a lot of races, which is different than what I’m used to, so it’s hard to get used to that but it’s fun,” Low said.
Layton won eight events: two relays, Low’s two races, the pole vault and all of the throwing events.
Anastasia Witte and Burklie Burton finished first and second in the javelin, scoring 18 team points. Witte also won the shot put and Burton won the discus. Emily Conlin won the pole vault. To cap off a meet where the Lancers won by 40 points, their 4 x 400 relay team took first place.
Fremont standout Amare Harlan won three events — the 100, 200 and long jump — and ran a leg on the Silverwolves’ first-place 4 x 100 relay team.
Harlan already owns state records in the 100 and 200, and she jumped 19 feet, 4 inches in the long jump, which is the second-best mark in state history (just behind the 19-04.75 set in 2001 by Amy Menlove of Alta).
Weber’s Eden DeVries won both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, running a personal-best 14.09 seconds in the 100 hurdles that ranks as the fourth fastest time in state history.
The boys team race was much closer. Layton beat Davis 153.5 to 142.5.
Tyler Poole, who owns the best marks in the state in the discus and shot put, won both events and also finished sixth in the javelin.
“It feels great. Going into this year I didn’t know how we were going to do, we lost a lot of our seniors last year … our throws really picked up a lot of points this year, our relay teams have been very good,” Poole said. “At first I didn’t think we had it but going through the season, meet through meet, I think we all started gaining confidence in ourselves to be where we’re at.”
He threw 184 feet, 11 inches in the discus and 57 feet, 11 inches in the shot put. Both distances were well out in front but Poole was frustrated afterward because he wanted to hit a personal record.
“It’s just so close. Every throw I’ve thrown this year it’s just been one thing off,” Poole said. “One day it’s gonna click, one day it’s gonna happen, so until then we’re going to keep learning — what we can do better, what we did wrong.”
Layton won the 4 x 100, 4 x 200 and 4 x 800 relay races, as well as the long jump with Christian Perez’s jump of 21 feet, 6 inches.
Detrik Reed, who ran a leg on both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay teams, came into the region meet with a personal best of 11.46 seconds in the 100 meters. He ran 10.93 seconds in Wednesday’s qualifying, then clocked 11.11 on Thursday to take third place.
D’Angelo “DJ” Mayes of Syracuse won the 100 and 200-meter races, and Weber freshman Joshua Hamblin won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.
The state track and field meet is scheduled for May 18-20 at Brigham Young University.
