Prep roundup: Wrestling divisional tournaments yield dozens of area champs

Dozens of area high school wrestlers were victorious Saturday in various prep wrestling divisional tournaments, which are used to seed the upcoming state tournaments. Two teams won their division championships.

On the boys side, Layton High had four divisional winners in 6A as the Lancers won the B Divisional with 437 team points.

The full 6A list of area divisional winners is: Geronimo Rivera Jr. (Layton, 113-pound weight class), Jace Lemons (Layton, 120), Jordan Faifai (Syracuse, 157), Sam May (Farmington, 157), Tanner Giatras (Weber, 165), Kael Bennie (Layton, 165), Ridge Lindley (Fremont, 190) and Noah Linford (Layton, 285).

In 5A, area divisional winners were Bridger Ricks (Box Elder, 120), Moses Espinoza-Owens (Viewmont, 157) and Marcus Espinoza-Owens (Viewmont, 165).

In 3A, Morgan High won the B Divisional with 310 team points, led by individual championships from Will Korth (126), Blake Woolsey (132), Zak Sargent (144) and Jarron Campbell (150).

On the girls side, there were nearly a dozen area divisional champions. This is the second season of girls wrestling being a sanctioned high school sport in Utah.

In 6A, winners were Kristina Kent (Davis, 100), Lexus Bertagnolli (Roy, 110), Marlie Rigby (Layton, 110), Brinlee Gines (Fremont, 130), Haley Diaz (Layton, 155) and Adel Roennebeck (Syracuse, 170).

In 5A, Mikalah Whitehouse (Northridge, 120), Patience Smith (Bonneville, 135), Fe Speredon (170) and Karla Padilla Zapeda (Northridge, 235) took home divisional championships.

In the combined 3A/2A/1A divisional tournaments, Tenley Jones (Morgan, 100) won her division championship bracket.

PREP DRILL TEAM

The state drill team championships for 6A and 5A were held over the weekend at Utah Valley University in Orem. In 6A, Farmington High finished in second place, with Davis in third and Layton fourth.

Farmington finished second in each of the three categories of dance, military and show. Bingham won the 6A championship.

In 5A, Viewmont High took first place in all three categories and won its first ever drill team state championship. Bountiful was third in each category and overall.

PREP BASKETBALL

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 36, BEN LOMOND 14

On Saturday, Layton Christian’s girls basketball team beat Ben Lomond in a rescheduled Region 13 game.

Ruzgar Boyle led LCA (15-4, 7-1 Region 13) with 17 points and made five 3-pointers as the Eagles took over solo first place in Region 13 ahead of a key showdown at Morgan on Tuesday.

Ofa Arreguin led Ben Lomond (3-15, 0-7 Region 13) with 6 points.

REAL SALT LAKE ACADEMY 76, LAYTON CHRISTIAN 63

On Saturday, Layton Christian’s boys basketball team lost to Real Salt Lake Academy. Sammy Ishimwe scored 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting to lead LCA (14-6), and Timmie Olubisi scored 13 points.
