Bountiful, Syracuse volleyball earn top seeds at 6A and 5A state tournaments
Northern Utah high school volleyball teams earned high seeds in this year’s 6A and 5A state tournaments, the brackets released Thursday morning revealed.
Syracuse (23-2) got a favorable draw in this year’s 6A tournament, on paper, after winning Region 1 unbeaten. The Titans earned the No. 2 seed and bye to the second round at Utah Valley University. They’ll face the winner of No. 15 Roy and No. 18 Farmington, then potentially could see No. 7 Hunter in the quarterfinals — the same quarterfinal round that’s been the Titans’ ending point the last few seasons.
One of Syracuse’s two losses this year was a 3-0 loss to Lone Peak, the tournament’s No. 3 seed and a possible semifinal opponent.
Fremont drew the No. 6 seed and will face a Region 1 foe, either No. 11 Clearfield or No. 22 Layton, at UVU. It will be just the second match for Fremont since a recent coaching change that saw assistant coach Jantzen Smith take over as acting head coach.
The Silverwolves (17-11) swept Layton this year, but split the series against Clearfield (14-7), which is in the midst of its best season since 2014. The Falcons beat the Lancers (6-22) in both region meetings this year.
One of the toughest first-round matchups fell to No. 15 Roy (14-8), which drew No. 18 Farmington (7-13).
The Royals, now playing in Region 2 instead of Region 1, had one of their best seasons in over a decade. They finished second place in Region 2 with a 10-2 record.
The Roy/Farmington winner faces Syracuse in the second round at UVU. Weber (11-16) just missed out on a home playoff game as the No. 17 seed and will travel to American Fork for the first round.
Davis (13-15) is the No. 14 seed and hosts Granger in the first round, with the winner facing Lone Peak at UVU.
In 5A, Region 5 champion Bountiful is the No. 1 seed, with rival Woods Cross the No. 4 seed.
The Redhawks won their second straight outright region title. Bountiful made it to the state semifinals last season before losing to eventual state champ Timpview, which is the No. 6 seed this year.
Both Bountiful and WX (18-4) get first-round byes and will play Thursday, Nov. 4, at UVU in the second round. The region rivals split the season series this year and could potentially face off in the semifinals.
Bountiful is arguably one of the top five teams in the state this year, having beaten 6A No. 1 seed Copper Hills and taken 6A No. 3 Lone Peak to five sets.
The 5A tournament is different from 6A in that it has 33 teams instead of 24, which adds a few play-in games for the bottom seeds who have to win to get into the first round.
Northridge (18-9) is the host of a “pod site” on Tuesday as the tournament’s No. 9 seed.
At 5 p.m. Tuesday in a play-in game, Timpanogos will face the winner of Monday’s Hillcrest/Cottonwood play-in game, with the winner then advancing to Northridge 30 minutes later.
Box Elder (15-13) is the No. 12 seed and will also be a “pod” host. The Bees, in the first round, will host the winner of a play-in match between Payson and Jordan.
Bonneville (9-19) is the tournament’s No. 23 seed and will travel to Park City to face No. 26 Stansbury, with the winner then facing Park City the same night.
Viewmont (16-11) is also a “pod” host, facing the Cedar Valley/Provo winner on Tuesday night.
