Utah State quarterback Bryson Barnes (16) hands off to Rahsul Faison (3) on Sept. 14, 2024 in Logan.

Utah State University is officially moving its athletics programs to the new Pac-12 Conference, the school announced Tuesday, while the latest reports have two others remaining pledged to the Mountain West Conference.

Court documents show Utah State and the Pac-12 made their move official Monday; the Aggies will begin competing in the Pac-12 in the 2026-27 school year.

USU joins Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State as members of the Mountain West to link with Oregon State and Washington State as leftovers of the previous iteration of the Pac-12.

“The vision of the Pac-12 Conference firmly aligns with USU’s mission and our commitments to the future” school president Elizabeth Cantwell said in a statement. “This move unlocks new possibilities by directly enhancing the student-athlete experience and will significantly strengthen our reputation for competitive success, academic achievement, and research excellence.”

The move leaves both the Pac-12 and the MWC with seven football-playing schools. Both will need to reach eight to remain postseason-eligible FBS conferences.

The Pac-12’s mission reached a roadblock Thursday when, according to multiple reports including from the Action Network and the Associated Press, UNLV and Air Force accepted bonuses to remain in the MWC.

Before USU chose the Pac-12, it seemed the Mountain West had its eight remaining members on board for a new media grant of rights but the Aggies’ departure gave the rest of its members a chance to reconsider. UNLV was a top target for the Pac-12 while the Air Force Academy considered, then publicly ended those considerations, joining the American Athletic Conference with Army and Navy, its fellow service academies.

The Associated Press reports that UNLV and Air Force have been offered signing bonuses of more than $20 million to stay. Those bonuses are possible due to expected payments of more than $100 million the departing schools owe the Mountain West in exit fees.

But the Pac-12 is suing the Mountain West over $55 million in poaching penalties that were part of a football scheduling agreement Oregon State and Washington State entered into with the conference for this season.
