Davis High and Brigham Young University alum Courtney Wayment has qualified for the Paris Olympics.

Wayment finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final Thursday with a time of 9:06.50, placing her in the required top three to clinch a spot, at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Three years ago, Wayment finished fourth to just miss the Olympic team.

“That fourth place never leaves you,” Wayment told NBC Sports after the race. “Last Olympic trials, (Valerie Constien) was the one that got that third spot and, when you watch your dreams run away from you in the last 30 seconds, it makes you feel something that you don’t want to ever feel again.”

Constien, of Edwards, Colorado, finished first with a time of 9:03.22, while Marisa Howard, of Pasco, Washington, finished third at 9:07.14.

Wayment, a four-time national champion at BYU, placed second at the USATF Championships in 2022 and was third in 2023.

“She has been so consistent the last few years,” a commentator for NBC Sports said during the race. “She’s clutch. She comes through when the pressure’s on and I think one of the things that makes her special is she just shows up. She gets the job done and she doesn’t put too much pressure on herself. And she just looks so relaxed. She’s looked really good this year. She had a huge personal best indoors in the 5,000 — actually hit the Olympic standard in that event.”
