Ogden police: Man shot, killed by officer after reportedly brandishing gun
OGDEN — One person was killed around midday Sunday after being shot by an Ogden police officer during an alleged domestic incident.
On Sunday afternoon, Ogden City Police Department Chief of Police Jacob Sube held a short press conference to brief local media on the situation.
“I do want to confirm the Ogden City Police Department was involved in an officer-involved shooting today,” he said. “At approximately noon, officers responded to a residence in the 900 block of 1050 North Street after a complainant requested police stand by and keep the peace while she collected belongings from her home.”
“Shortly after arrival, officers were confronted by the complainant’s estranged husband, who’s a 45-year-old male, who was confrontational and uncooperative,” Sube said of the reported encounter. “After the complainant and officers entered the home, the male grabbed and brandished a firearm. One of the officers on (the) scene fired his duty weapon, striking the suspect male.”
Sube said medical personnel were summoned and officers on-site provided first aid until they arrived.
“Despite life-saving efforts, the male succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” he said. “The Weber County Critical Incident Investigation Team has been activated and will conduct an independent investigation into this incident, which is within our established protocol.”
Neither the man who was killed nor the officer who shot him were identified.
Sube said the officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy, pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.
“This step not only ensures the integrity of the investigation but also allows the officer to focus on their mental health and wellness during this challenging time,” he said.
No other details about the incident were released Sunday afternoon, but Sube said more information will be made available in the coming days.
