Arrestee dies in Box Elder jail; investigation underway
BRIGHAM CITY — An investigation is underway into the death Monday of a 49-year-old man in the Box Elder County Jail.
Jail deputies found Jed Collatz in cardiac distress at 11:15 a.m. during a regular cell check, according to a Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office news release. Jail deputies and medical staff and Brigham City paramedics were unable to resuscitate Collatz, the release said.
The sheriff’s office activated the Northern Utah Critical Investigative Team to investigate the death. The team handles investigations of people who die in the custody of law enforcement.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Cade Palmer said Wednesday he had no further information to release, pending the outcome of the investigation.
First District Court documents showed that Collatz was arrested at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday on an aggravated assault allegation in Elwood and was booked into the jail at 7:30 p.m. He was ordered held in lieu of $5,000 bail.
According to Standard-Examiner records from recent years, the Box Elder jail previously reported deaths on June 19, 2021, due to an inmate experiencing drug withdrawal; and on Dec. 16, 2020, for a prisoner who suffered an apparent medical problem.
Collatz’s death occurred a few hours before a Weber County Jail inmate in Ogden was found dead, also of an apparent suicide.
A U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics report last October showed that Utah had 85 jail suicides per 100,000 inmates in 2015-19, compared with the national average of 48. Among the 11 Western states, Utah trailed only Colorado, which had 93 suicides per 100,000.
