Morgan parents subdue man found hiding under child’s bed
MORGAN — A Morgan couple confronted, fought and subdued a man they found hiding under their 7-year-old daughter’s bed on Friday, according to authorities, and prosecutors filed criminal charges against the suspect on Monday.
At 4:30 a.m. Friday, the child called to the adults that a man was under her bed, and to their shock there was, Morgan County Sheriff’s Sgt. Craig Tillet said Monday. “The mom and dad fought with the guy,” Tillet said. “The mom got the daughter out of the room and tried to shut the door to hold him in the room.”
According to Morgan County Attorney’s Office charging documents, the confrontation spilled into a hallway, where the man and the male homeowner grappled and they fell down a staircase, injuring the homeowner. But Tillet said the homeowner was able to pin the intruder until sheriff’s deputies arrived.
Garrett Brent Bills, 25, was charged with aggravated burglary and aggravated sexual abuse of a child, both first-degree felonies, and two counts of second-degree felony burglary. He is held at the Weber County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bond.
Later Friday, the girl was interviewed at the Weber-Morgan Children’s Justice Center in Ogden. Prosecutors said that the girl reported the man apparently had been in her room three times within a two-week period.
“Apparently, the first two times she thought she had imagined it or was dreaming,” Tillet said.
On the first incident, the intruder allegedly touched the girl’s buttocks, charging documents said. The second time, the girl said she saw the man holding her stuffed animal toy.
The girl said all three times the man wore all-black clothing, according to the charges. Sheriff’s deputies said Bills upon his arrest wore black clothes and a shirt tied on his face as a mask.
The couple and the child did not know Bills, according to the charging documents.
